Pro­gram for future po­lice of­fi­cers

The Porter County Sher­iff ’s Depart­ment is form­ing a pro­gram for young peo­ple in­ter­ested in law en­force­ment ca­reers.

The Law En­force­ment Ca­reer Ex­plor­ing pro­gram will pro­vide class­room and prac­ti­cal ex­pe­ri­ences and will em­pha­size com­mu­nity in­volve­ment, char­ac­ter devel­op­ment and lead­er­ship.

Train­ing top­ics will in­clude crim­i­nal and accident in­ves­ti­ga­tions, phys­i­cal fit­ness, de­fen­sive tac­tics, SWAT, K9, first aid, CPR and firearms safety and train­ing. The pro­gram is open to any­one ages 14 to 20, and all costs are cov­ered by the sher­iff ’s depart­ment.

Meet­ings will take place twice a month. An in­for­ma­tional meet­ing will be held at 7 p.m. Sept. 11 at the sher­iff ’s depart­ment, 2755 In­di­ana 49, Val­paraiso.
