MUNSTER — On at least one point, Munster coach Leroy Marsh and Chesterton coach Mark Peterson agree: The Mustangs offense is pretty darn good.

“That’s the best offensive group I’ve seen from Munster in a long time,” Peterson said after Munster’s 31-14 win over Chesterton on Friday night.

“They do a nice job. They’re consistent, they get to the hole, they’re good up front.”

In a game delayed for 40 minutes by lightning between the first and second quarters, the Mustangs (20) outscored the Trojans (0-2) 17-0 in the second half.

“We knew going into the season that this was the best skill we’ve had in years, running and throwing and catching,” said Marsh, whose team ended a three-game losing streak to Chesterton since the se- ries resumed in 2011. “We were young up front, but they’ve done a nice job the last two games against two good Duneland Conference teams.”

Dominic Lucito led the Mustangs with 129 yards and two touchdowns on 26 carries, including the goahead 3-yard score with 5:18 left in the third quarter. Munster added a 10-yard touchdown pass from Adam Ostoich to Zack Pickett with 11:11 left in the game.

“The sweeps weren’t working that well in the first half, but we made some adjustments after the lightning delay, changed some blocks,” Lucito said. “It opened up the outside and fired up the dives for me and Jeff (Proctor), and the line did a great job.”

Munster was without injured senior running back Seth Gutwein, expected to return next week, as both teams were missing key players. Chesterton was without seniors defensive back Jordan Dilosa and running back Avery Beeks be- cause of a violation of team rules, Peterson said.

“Wonderful kids,” Peterson said. “It’s a one-game thing.”

After the lightning delay, Chesterton had marched down the field. Quarterback Garritt Slatcoff (83 yards on 14 carries) converted on fourth-and-goal from the 1 with 8:37 left in the first half, drawing the Trojans to 7-6.

The Mustangs answered right back, with Lucito — who had blocked the extra point — racing around the right side for a 14-yard touchdown run with 4:16 left in the half.

Chesterton tied the score at 14-14 with six seconds left in the half. Slatcoff scored his second 1-yard touchdown, then floated a two-point conversion pass to Logan Hofferth, who made a nice grab in the back right corner of the end zone.

Munster had taken a 7-0 lead with 58 seconds left in the first quarter on Ostoich’s 1-yard touchdown.
