Colwell, George Adam
83, of Crown Point, IN, passed away on Friday, August 22, 2014 at the Veterans Residence of Cameron, MO. George was born on November 8, 1930 in Joliet, IL, to the late George and Kate (Loeffler). George was a veteran of the Army Air Corps and served in the Korean War where he trained as a paratrooper and received commendations for his service. He was a continuous member of the National Carpenters and Joiners Union and a Millwright for local #1043 for over 50 years. George, AKA Big George, was an avid golfer and a lover of a good time. He was known to work hard, sweat, get dirty, laugh and play hard. While Big George presented a “toughguy” persona, those who knew him beyond his gruff exterior loved him and understood George’s loyalty knew no bounds.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Donna (Westphal). George is survived by his first wife, Betty (Sasseville) four children, Cindy (Ashman), Larry, Jeff Shaffner and Kelley ShaffnerBrown. George is also survived by his 5 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A private ceremony will be held in Kansas City, MO. A celebration of his life, where tall tales and laughter can be shared, will be held at the Gary Sportsman’s Club, 10101 Madison St., Crown Point, Indiana on Saturday, November 1st, 12:00-3:00 p.m.
