Kupcho earns playoff win at LPGA event

After missing a 2-foot eagle putt on the first hole of a playoff, Jennifer Kupcho won the LPGA Meijer Classic on Sunday, when Leona Maguire’s 3-foot birdie try lipped out on the second extra hole.

Kupcho closed with a 1-under 71 to match playing partner Nelly Korda and Maguire at 18-under 270 at Blythefiel­d Country Club in Belmont, Michigan. Maguire finished with a 65, and birdied both playoff holes.

Korda, the winner last year, had a 72 after taking a one-stroke lead over Kupcho into the final round. Korda dropped out of the playoff with a threeputt par on first extra trip down the par-5 18th.

Kupcho, 25, won for the second time on the LPGA Tour, following her major victory in early April at Mission Hills in the California desert.

Swimming: Torri Huske, Caeleb Dressel and Alex Walsh all won for the U.S. on the second day of racing at the world swimming championsh­ips in Budapest, Hungary. The 19-year-old Huske improved on her own American record in the women’s 100-meter butterfly, clocking 55.64 seconds to finish ahead of French swimmer Marie Wattel and China’s Zhang Yufei. Canada’s Maggie Mac Neil, who won in 2019, and Sweden’s Sarah Sjöström, the 2017 winner, both skipped the race. Dressel, 25, was a half-second off the world record as he took gold in the men’s 50 butterfly with 22.57. Walsh clocked 2:07.13 in the women’s 200 medley, the fifth fastest time ever posted. The 20-year-old American finished 1.44 seconds ahead Australia’s Kaylee McKeown.

WNBA: The Sky clinched the second and final spot in next month’s Commission­er’s Cup, where they will take on the WNBA-best Aces. The Sky secured their berth as the Eastern Conference representa­tive with the Sun’s loss to the Mystics. The Aces earned their spot out of the West with a 92-84 victory over the Wings on Wednesday.
