Ice skating in Crown Point may become the city’s official pastime this winter if reports of its popularity hold true after discussions at the Mayor’s Tuesday Talks event recently.

“The Learn to Skate and hockey programs have hundreds of skaters,” said Adam Graper, PACE director.

Those wanting to be in on the fun can sign up at the ice rink at Bulldog Park.

Mayor Pete Land — following in the footsteps of former Mayor David Uran — has held the meetings every first Tuesday of the month, but Land will switch them to Mondays starting in February.

There is no January meeting for the Tuesday Talks group.

“It will be called ‘Mondays with the Mayor’ now,” Land said.

At this Tuesday Talks meeting, held at SIP Coffee House, the mayor said the city has received another $1 million Community Crossings grant for roadway projects. It will be matched by $1 million the city has set aside.

Land also discussed the ongoing work at Sauerman Woods.

Earlier this year the city of Crown Point broke ground on a stormwater improvement project at Sauerman Woods. The Hub Pool is being demolished and a new pond is being excavated to make way for amenities, including renting a paddle boat or going fishing.

In the first quarter of 2023 Land said the city will have a community meeting to gather citizen input on the proposed upgrades to Sauerman Woods.

“People have ideas, and it’s important to me and the city to hear them,” the mayor said.

New businesses in Crown Point were discussed, including the Lash Lounge; The Original Steaks and Hoagies,; S & T Too, a take-and-bake pizza store; and Commonwealth, a water resource engineering and consulting services company.

Julie Wendorf, director of the Crown Point Library, said volunteers were needed to join the Friends of the Library, which has meetings at the Crown Point Library along with many other free programs.
