Highland man faces charge in shooting

Allegedly attacked woman with handgun as she ran down hallway

A Highland man is facing an attempted murder charge after shooting at a woman who was running down a hallway.

William Richmond III is charged with attempted murder, a level 1 felony.

About 2:50 p.m. Friday, a woman reported an incident that had occurred in the 2900 block of Strong Street, according to the probable cause affidavit.

The woman told police that she asked to borrow Richmond’s car to set up a bank account for her daughter as his vehicle was blocking hers in, court records state. He told her that he didn’t think it was a good idea due to a civil issue involving her vehicle, then he responded “Do you want men to start shooting?” and grabbed a handgun from the nightstand, records state. The woman immediatel­y started running down the hallway and heard four gunshots, one of which struck her right inside ankle. She didn’t stop running until she was down the block without her phone, the affidavit states.

The woman walked to the Highland Police Department to report the incident.

Officers made contact with Richmond by phone. When he emerged from the house wearing pants and no shirt, police handcuffed him, court records state. He told police that he and the woman had argued, and he guessed that the woman did not feel safe, thus going to the police department. Police saw a bullet hole in the wall through the front door and saw debris on the ground. He said no one else was in the house, records state.

He admitted that he had two dogs that were friendly and multiple guns that he kept in the bedroom. Police observed bullet holes in the floor near the bedroom and the hallway, according to the affidavit.
