Student fires bullet from officer’s gun at Hammond school
No injuries reported
No one was injured after a Hammond middle school student managed to fire off a round from a gun inside the holster of a school security guard Monday in a school office.
A School City of Hammond release said the bullet went into a wall at Eggers Middle School, and lodged in a supply cabinet.
The shot went off after the school resource officer restrained the student and she made several attempts to grab the gun.
“We are extremely lucky that it did not hit anyone,” Superintendent Scott Miller said in a Monday social media post.
The incident began after an administrator noticed two students roaming the hallways and told the security officer to escort them to the main office.
The release said one of the students “had a mental health episode” and despite several attempts to redirect the student, the campus was put on “secure” status while the security officer attempted to resolve the situation.
After the gun was fired the student was restrained and Hammond police took her into custody.
Officials said no students or staff were injured. There are about 800 students at the grades 7-8 middle school at 5825 S. Blaine Ave.
The students will be disciplined according to the district’s code of conduct, school officials said in their release.
The 14-year-old girl, who is known to Hammond police, was subdued and is facing charges, Hammond police spokesman Lt. Steve Kellogg said in an email.
“It is important to note that the police department, while not assuming responsibility for the incident, believes in transparency and deems it necessary to report this information to the public,” Kellogg said. “The safety of the students and staff at Eggers Junior High School remains a top priority.”
