Pirates fall to Wolverines, prepare for bi-district vs. Wardogs

Poteau’s baseball team hosted Vian on Tuesday and lost 5-3.

“Now we’ve got a lot of injuries. Hopefully, Dax [Collins] is okay,” Poteau head coach Ryan Dill said after Collins hit a foul ball off the inside of his left knee. “We lost [Logan] Walker, our second baseman. Of course, we don’t have [Wesley] Garrett. Now, Dax and [Kord] Fenton have been hurt a little bit. The injuries have really hurt us. What we’re having to do is step up with players who don’t have much experience that are having to fill big positions. Some of them have done a pretty good job. Some of them are just so young.”

The Wolverines only scored in two innings. They scored three runs in the third and two runs in the fourth inning. What was so painful for the Pirates was the fact that both scoring surges were keyed by middle infield mistakes. Poteau managed to score two runs in the fifth inning and a run in the final inning.

Pierce Ballard started for the Pirates. He got into hot water in the second inning, as he gave up a hit and back to back walks to juice the bases. He then coaxed a 6-3 groundout to end the threat.

Poteau made a change on the mound as they sent Calloway Warren to the hill. Warren was welcomed by Vian with three runs being scored. The Wolverines also left the bases full as the Piates threw out a runner at the plate to end the inning.

Vian scored twice in the fourth. Poteau finally put together a two run surge in the bottom of the fifth. Kord Fenton and Ben Brooks each posted an RBI.

Peyton Eggleston for the Pirates scored their last run for the Pirates. He was driven in by Caden Fox.Brooks and Warren both had two hits. Holden Mattox walked twice.

Poteau plays its Class 4A bi-district against Miami on Thursday.

“We’re just trying to be as good as we can be. If we can as good as we can be for two games on Thursday [for bi-district], we can get ourselves to next week. Then, next week, anything can happen,” Dill said, referring to regionals.
