- By Jim Marsh Sports Correspondent

Poteau’s baseball team swept its bi-district against Miami on Thursday, totaling 32 runs in the two games.

Poteau had the combination in the doubleheader sweep against the Wardogs, jiving offensively with defense played two great games. Poteau’s two senior pitchers, Ben Brooks and Caden Fox, were in control as they only allowed one run in the two five-inning games.

Brooks won the opener 12-0, holding Miami hitless until one out in the final inning. Fox gave up only one run in his tour of pitching. That was due to an errant pickoff attempt that flew down the right field line. Miami ran out of pitchers in the fourth inning. Poteau (15-17) led 5-0 going into the fourth inning, but scored 15 runs in the final two innings to win 20-1.

Since he took a nono into the final inning, Brooks’ pitching had to be the story of Game 1. He gave up a hit in the fifth inning after a runner reached base on an error, putting runners on second and third base. He got the final two batters to strike out looking on wide sweeping curveballs.

Dax Collins and Kord Fenton each went 3-for4. Collins drilled his first home run of the game in the fifth, and that was followed by Fenton who hugged the right field line for a triple.

Game 2 turned into a turkey shoot in the fourth and fifth innings. Poteau scored 15 runs in the last two innings. Poteau had two moon shots in the fourth inning. Collins stroked his second home run of the game and his third of the series. Caden Fox also posted a homer in the fourth. In the second game, Collins went 4-for4 with two home runs, a double and single.

Callaway Warren was hit by pitch three straight times at the plate. All the freshmen got on base via the wildness of Miami’s pitchers. Peyton Eggelston took advantage of his pitch-hitting opportunity and drilled a double.

The Pirates advance to the Class 4A regional Thursday at Pryor.
