Another cruise to seek out the rattlesnake derby
A year after going to the Mangum Rattlesnake Derby, I made a return trip to the derby on Saturday to get some good photos of rattlesnakes.
I didn’t intend to merely capture shots of them merely at the festival portion of the derby like last year, but in the field where the hunters were searching for them.
I barely made it to Mangum in time to join the caravan before it headed to some field 30 minutes west of the town.
While unable to snap shots of hunters in the act of catching rattlesnakes, I got them as men used sticks with pincers to pull them out to measure.
Only two were caught that afternoon, the longer one being 41.5 inches.
Several were caught the day before.
That night, I camped at Quartz Mountain State Park, which is 15 minutes away from Mangum. I heard wolves and coyotes.
The LeFlore County Bass Club Tournament scheduled for Saturday was postponed because of flooding at Chicken Creek near Tenkiller Lake.
The LCBC Junior Bassmasters will have a tournament at Wister Lake, launching from Ward’s Landing on Saturday.
