Pirates’ rally fervor not high enough

Poteau’s baseball team won one of three games in its Class 4A regional at Pryor.

The Pirates (16-19) won their first game on Friday 15-4 against Berryhill.

Caden Fox produced an all-around gem, throwing a complete-game five-hitter, allowing four walks while throwing four strikeouts.

Fox went 3-for-3 with a two-run single in the second inning.

Dax Collins went 2-for4 with a walk. Kord Fetnon had two walks and a hit. Holden Mattox and Jagger Dodson both went 2-for-4.

Logan Walker had a hit, a walk and two runs batted in.

Afterwards, Poteau lost 14-4 to Pryor after leading 4-1 by the top of the third inning.

The Tigers scored six runs in the third inning and seven in the fifth.

Fenton went 2-for-2 with a walk. Walker was 2-for-2 with an RBI. Fox had a hit and two RBIs.

Poteau found itself in a deep hole on Saturday afternoon against Hilldale, but put its rally spirit on before being eliminated with a 16-13 defeat.

The Pirates trailed 12-1 through three innings before rushing back to tie it 12-all with an 11-run top of the fourth. The boys in red and white gained steam by starting the inning with three walks and three batters hit by pitch.

Fox hit a two-run single. Fenton scored on a drop-ball third strike to tie it.

However, Hilldale responded with four runs in the bottom of the fourth.

Poteau notched one in the top of the fifth with Peyton Eggleston scoring on a passed ball. The Pirates had two baserunner­s in the sixth inning and a hit in the seventh.

Fox went 2-for-3 with two walks and three RBIs. Collins went 2-for-4 with two walks and an RBI.

Poteau had made the Class 4A state baseball tournament five straight years before this.
