Poteau’s Ben Brooks signed to play baseball for Mid-American Christian University of Oklahoma City on Wednesday.

“I watched a few games that they played. I liked how they played. They looked pretty good. I’m just excited to get there and definitely excited to get to the next level.

Brooks was part of two Pirates teams that reached the Class 4A state quarterfinals.

This season, Brooks threw 59 strikeouts in 51.1 innings.

Brooks’ fastball is at 8586 miles per hour. He said he hopes to get it higher by next season.

Brooks said he can contribute “definitely with pitching and hitting. I think I can do both there.”

Brooks said that with hard work, he might be able to start on the mound in his freshman season. He added that he hopes to be a starter all four years while earning his business degree.

Brooks said that at MACU, the coaches will work with him on his off-speed pitches, tweak his hitting and get him stronger to hit the ball harder.

In addition to pitcher, Brooks will also field third base and outfield.

He said he knows he will have the throwing range for those positions.

Mid-American Christian University, an NAIA program, went 31-20 (12-12 Sooner Athletic Conference) this season, winning one of three SAC tournament games.
