Ryan Carter is preparing to start his high-school girls basketball head coaching career at Wister.

“It means everything. I’m excited. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do. It’s a good place for me for my first head-coaching job,” Carter said.

Carter guided Fanshawe to back-to-back girls basketball ORES state championships in his two years at the school. He also coached the boys basketball team to a state runner-up finish and the girls track team to an ORES state championship this year.

Carter will bring three

of his best Fanshawe players, Slatey Free, Mia McGowen and Josey Peterson, to Wister.

“With those girls and the girls that are already there, I think we can be successful this year and for years to come,” Carter said.

He previously served as an assistant girls basketball coach at Heavener.

As an assistant coach, Carter learned from coaches like Jim Roll the importance of instilling discipline and structure.

Carter replaces Darrion Luce as Wister’s head girls basketball coach. Wister went 10-13 in 2021-22.

“People say it’s a hard job, but if someone’s going to turn it around, it’s going to be me,” Carter said.
