Graduation sections coming May 28; Kiwanis Club events coming up
The Poteau Daily News’ 2022 Graduation Sections — I can now confirm that it will be three sections totaling 24 pages — will publish May 28. As I write this, the two schools from whom I have not received any graduation information — which is a group photograph of the seniors and their biographies — are Bokoshe and Whitesboro. I also am lacking Cameron High School’s senior biographies. At this point, what we are guaranteeing in the three 2022 Graduation sections are the 13 high schools’ seniors and their biographies and the eighthgrade graduates from the four schools which only go that high — Fanshawe, Hodgen, Monroe and Shady Point — and their biographies due to space constraints. Anything else received for the 2022 Graduation Sections that don’t “make the cut” will be placed on our website. I need those by the end of this week, since it will be sent to Stigler Printing for printing May 25. Everything can be e-mailed to me at editor@poteaudailynews.com.
The Poteau Kiwanis Club Golf Tournament will begin at 10 a.m. May 27 at Wolf Ridge Country Club, with registration at 9 a.m. The entry fee for the three-golfer, par-3 tournament is $195. Hole sponsorship is $100. For additional information or to sign up or to purchase a hole sponsorship, call tournament director Lyle Whitworth at (918) 413-2929 or Susan Jenson at (918) 649-3146.
The Poteau Kiwanis Club’s annual Learn to Swim program will begin June 7 at Twyman Pool. It will take place each morning of June 7, 9, 14, 16, 21, 23, 28 and 30. More than likely, there will be two hour-long sessions daily — one from 9-10 a.m. and one from 10-11 a.m., so that the lessons by the lifeguards can be completed in time to open for usual daily business around noon. Kiddos with their parents can register them on opening day, and there is no cost as this is one of our Kiwanis Club-based funded projects. As Poteau Kiwanis Club president the last approximately four years, we have been told that this was where their kids learned to swim. Last year, I even had a “student” come up and hug me in showing her thanks. It’s not quite 100 percent concrete, but I’d say about 85 to 90 percent concrete, that this year will have a little new spin as we are trying to maybe use the final day as day of competitive events. We still have some of our Little Olympic medals left from last month’s event, and they only have the Kiwanis logo on them. Feel free to reach out to me at The Poteau Daily News at (918) 6478-3188, Ext. 30 or by e-mail at editor@poteaudailynews.com.
Sports Editor Tom Firme can now breathe a bit easier as his 2021-22 athletic season is just about completed. All that is left, with the exception of some summer camps, golf tournaments, etc …, is the Carl Albert State College baseball team at the 2022 Region II Tournament at David Allen Memorial Ballpark in Enid — my hometown, by the way. For those who don’t know nor have ever visited David Allen Memorial Ballpark, most of the seats are from the Baltimore Orioles’ former home — Memorial Stadium — as soon as the O’s moved to Oriole Park at Camden Yards.
We shall see if 2022 has a shot at horse racing Triple Crown winner when Rich Strike competes in the 147th Preakness Stakes on Saturday at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore. As I mentioned last week, the last Triple Crown winner was Justify in 2018 after American Pharaoh broke a 37-year drought of lack of Triple Crown winners in 2015 — with the last one prior to American Pharaoh being Affirmed in 1978. • • •
