Memorial Day and live music

- Terry Joe Wiles

There’s lots of music this Memorial Day Weekend because Monday is recognized as Memorial Day. Please remember the many reasons for it.

Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in military service for the United States. We all know someone, family or friends, that has paid the ultimate price for our freedom. “Greater love has no one than this, to lay down one’s life for family and friends” — John 15:13.

In your own way, please remember the fallen.

I had to remember some confusion is a symptom of a longer life, that it was “Decoration Day” when I was growing up. It wasn’t until 1966 that it became officially “Memorial Day.” I have lots of memories of our family cleaning and decorating graves, not just veterans that had fallen, but all our relatives and friends — AND there is nothing more moving than seeing the flags that are placed by the VFW on the final resting place of our veterans. A good way to explain it all to inquiring minds is a trip to the Fort Smith (Ark.) National Cemetery. The solemn beauty of the rows of hundreds of red, white and blue against the white headstones puts it more in perspective. Never forget their sacrifice.
