Graduation sections coming out Saturday; Memorial Day deadlines

- David Seeley PDN Editor

The Poteau Daily News’ 2022 Graduation Sections will publish in Saturday’s edition.

We have had a few inquiries as to when it will be coming out. I might point out that this will be the fourth straight editorial column by yours truly in which this has been mentioned, and there has been other little notices about this as well.

Historically, PDN has always put out our Graduation section on Memorial Day Weekend’s edition, since Poteau High School’s graduation ceremony takes place on Friday night of Memorial Day Weekend. However, this year it was decided to move it up a week.

PDN’s promotional calendar is sort of like a school district’s calendar — set dates. Thus, it was pretty much impossible for us to make the change to the weekend edition prior just so it would correlate to PHS’ graduation ceremony.

Speaking of Memorial Day, naturally PDN will be closed on Monday.

However, in years past, we editorial guys, like myself and Sports Editor Tom Firme, have had to work on Memorial Day to finish up the day-after Memorial Day Tuesday morning edition.

However, we have been asked by Stigler Printing, where we have our editions published, to give them next Tuesday’s edition on Friday.

So, PDN will be producing Saturday’s edition on Thursday and Tuesday’s edition on Friday.

The obituary deadlines for each of these editions will be 2 p.m. Thursday for Saturday’s edition and 2 p.m. Friday for Tuesday’s edition.

It also means Tom and I will be able to enjoy the entire Memorial Day Weekend without having to return to work until next Tuesday.

We are having a Memorial Day Salute Page in Saturday’s edition. If you would like to be a sponsor of this page by getting with PDN Advertising Reps Sierra Elmore (advertising@poteaudailynews.com) or Tabitha Wilcox (twilcox@poteaudailynews.com) or by calling them at (918) 647-3188. The deadline to get on the salute page will be 4 p.m. Wednesday.

When last Tuesday’s edition came out, I had mentioned that this past Saturday that Rich Strike, who won the Kentucky Derby on May 7 at Churchill Downs in Louisville had a shot a becoming the next race horse to earn the coveted Triple Crown.

Of course, these columns are written on Mondays. By the end of last Tuesday, it was learned that Rich Strike would sit out last Saturday’s running of the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Track in Baltimore, which meant no Triple Crown winner for 2022.

For the record, Saturday’s Preakness Stakes was won by Early Voting. Seeley is the editor of The Poteau Daily News. He can be reached by telephone at (918) 647-3188, Ext. 30 or by e-mail at editor@poteaudailynews.com.
