Poteau builds up through Red-White Scrimmage
Poteau’s football team put forth high energy in the Red-White Scrimmage on Saturday.
“We had a good week of practice, and I think we finished with a great scrimmage. We’re healthy, and I like where we’re at,” Poteau head coach Greg Werner said.
Freshman Sam Tecla and Pierce Ballard received snaps at quarterback. Kord Fenton was inactive since he is recovering from having his appendix removed.
“I thought they threw the ball well. I thought they operated the offense well. Both handled snaps and looked pretty sharp. We’re happy. We still have a lot of decisions to make and a long way to go,” Werner said, adding that he will make a decision on the starting quarterback after Friday.
Poteau returns eight starters on defense, making that side of the ball the more stable part.
“We knew that defense would have to lead us early on. They’ve surely not disappointed. They continue to show what we want them to. We’re excited about what’s coming,” Werner said.
The Pirates will scrimmage on Friday in Rogers, Ark., with Rogers Heritage and Prarie Grove.
“We just want to keep smoothing things out and work on the offense. We also want to figure out who’s going to play where,” Werner said of the work to be done in sorting before the scrimmage. He also said work needs to be done in determining who will play on the offensive line and who will be backups at other positions.
Poteau went 11-2 last season, winning its fourth straight district title and reaching the Class 4A state semifinal. Poteau opens the season Aug. 26 at Tulsa against Bishop Kelley.
