One of Howe’s basketball teams landed timely shots while the other did not during the last day at the Bill Frye Invitational in Mansfield, Ark., on Friday.

Howe’s boys won the third-place game 54-47 against Mansfield.

“It was just sticking to the game plan and getting good shots. In the last four games, we’ve been in the fashion of next man up, do your best,” Howe head coach Britt Brown said.

Howe had a 10-9 edge at the end of the first quarter. The Lions and Tigers traded baskets throughout the second quarter. Aldon Lemus converted a layup to tie it at 18 with 2:30 left in the half. Josh Toney drained a three with six seconds left, allowing Howe to enter halftime tied with the host team at 21.

The Lions opened the second half with an 11-3 run, capped by a layup by Lemus.

Howe (6-4) ended the

quarter ahead 39-33.

A Wes Toney trey from the right corner gave Howe a 44-34 advantage with 6:25 left. Mansfield did not get within five points until the last minute.

Wes Toney scored 15 points. Reece Harrison scored 10 of his 15 points in the second half. Josh Toney and Braden Blake both had six, Lemus. Garrett Smith and Kyler Brown each had four.

Howe’s boys lost 5836

to Elkins in the semifinal on Dec. 28. The Lions trailed 11-5 at the end of the first quarter, 2619 at halftime and 40-28 through three quarters.

Blake led Howe with 12 points while Harrison had eight.

Howe’s girls (10-1, ranked second in Class 2A) took their first loss of the season 48-21 against unbeaten Mansfield in the tournament championship.

“I think the biggest problem is that they’re big — a 6-4 kid in the middle and a 6-1 [guard] on the back line, another 5-10 player. They’re long. They affect everything. They full everything to the middle. We never got comfortable on any shot,” Howe head coach Chris Brown said.

Mansfield reeled off several buckets with no reply in the last five minutes of the first quarter to

put Howe in a 20-7 hole.

Breanna Wann lofted a bucket with 2.9 seconds left in the half as Howe trailed 34-14 at the break.

Howe trailed 43-18 at the end of the third quarter.

Kadynce Delt led Howe with 12 points while Wann had seven and Karsyn Nye had six.

Howe had beaten Elkins 61-32 in the semifinal on Dec. 28.

Karsyn Nye added 17 points while Josey Peterson had 16 with a trio of second-half treys.

Howe plays next at home against Westville on January 5 for homecoming night, with the boys game at 6 p.m. and the girls at 7:30 p.m.
