- By Jim Marsh Sports Correspondent

Poteau’s baseball team lost 9-8 in eight innings against Broken Bow at home on Monday.

This was the Pirates’ District 4A-2 opener and the Pirates struck first in the opening inning. Dax Collins started the game off with a single through the hole between the third baseman and the shortstop. Calloway Warren was then hit by pitch and both Pirates scored on a deep double into center field off the bat of Caston Fox.

But then the Savages took advantage of Poteau’s benevolence. All six of the Savages runs in the second and third innings were the direct results of walks and miscues in the field. Then, the Pirates made several clutch base running errors.

Poteau scored a run in the second inning as Garrett Fincham was driven in from third on a single by Collins to tie it at 3. Poteau trailed 6-3 after the three Broken Bow runs in the top of the third.

In the middle innings, the Pirates the Poteau twirlers settled into rhythm. Coby Bell and Fox did not allow any runs from the fourth to seventh innings. On offense, Poteau took advantage of Broken Bow miscues. Peyton Eggleston, Collins and Dax Hendricks all scored via errors.

Poteau made a pitching change in the fifth inning. Fox threw three innings of shutout ball to send the game into extra innings.

There was only one hard hit ball all night long. Fox got a quick out, but then walked a Savage. The following Broken Bow hitter then found an inside curveball to his liking and blasted a home run. Poteau then threw gas on the fire as a two-base error added the third run.

Poteau had six base runners in their half of the inning, but could only manage two runs.

Collins finished 3-for-4 with a walk and an RBI.

On Tuesday at Broken Bow, Poteau lost 5-4 in eight innings.

Poteau scored a run in the first inning. Both teams scored one in the fifth, and Poteau made it 3-1 in the sixth as Dax Hendrix scored on an error. Broken Bow tied it with a two-run home run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh.

Brycen Waugh scored with two outs in the top of the eighth inning, and then Hendrix was out on at third base to end the inning.

After Aiden Sockey walked Broken Bow’s leadoff hitter, he was relieved, having throwing nearly the limit with 116 pitches. He threw seven strikeouts while allowing five hits and four walks in seven-plus innings. Mitchell took the mound, and Broken Bow scored two runs on singles.

Collins hit 2-for-3 with a walk. Sockey had a hit and two RBIs. Bell and Hendrix each walked three times.
