Pirates survive to even series with Wagoner

- By Jim Marsh Sports Correspondent

Having been totally drubbed at Wagoner on Monday night, the Poteau Pirates baseball team was hoping to right its ship and get back into the win column.

Poteau held a 6-1 lead going into the sixth inning, but Wagoner started to groove its swings. Dax Collins threw a runner out at home plate and Coby Bell snagged a torrid line drive for the final out to save the 6-5 win for Poteau Pirates.

Wagoner scored a first inning run on a series of errors by the Pirates.

Poteau quickly matched that as Collins drilled the right center wall and motored into the hot corner for a triple. Aiden Sockey quickly tied the score as he hit a deep sacrifice fly to left field.

Poteau gained the lead as Warren drove in Sockey in the third inning.

Poteau added two more in the fourth as Caston Fox walked and Caden Mitchell drilled a double. Garrett Finchum hit a benign roller into the 3-4 hole for a double that plated two runs.

In the fifth the Pirates added another deuce to the scoreboard. On an error by the second baseman, that allowed Sockey and Warren

to score.

Wagoner added two runs in the top of the sixth on three bunts in a row and a single. There could have been more runs scored, but Collins threw out a Warrior at home plate.

Wagoner scored two more runs in the final inning. Poteau cut down another runner in a rundown between third base and home. The last out of the game was a lineout to Bell at third base.

Bell threw five strikeouts in six innings. Collins

and Calloway Warren each hit 2-for-4.

On Thursday in Claremore, Poteau lost its first game of the Tiger/Zebra Classic 6-3 to Booker T. Washington.

Poteau lit up the scoreboard in the bottom of the third inning when Collins tripled and scored on a groundout by Sockey.

Booker T. Washington scored three runs in the fourth and two in the fifth before the Pirates answered with two in the bottom of the fifth.

Sockey finished 2-for-3 with a walk. Pierce Ballard pitched three hitless innings, throwing three strikeouts and allowing three walks.

Poteau played Tahlequah and Claremore in Claremore on Friday.
