Poteau teams edge Heavener

In the ladies game on Thursday at Costner Stadium, the Poteau Lady Pirates and the Heavener Lady Wolves battle through regulation, two overtime periods and then Poteau outscored Heavener in a five-player penalty shootout. Poteau scored four of five penalty kicks, while the Lady Wolves only made two of four.

Goalkeeper Laney Edwards booted the clinching penalty kick.

Poteau’s Julia Ambrosio and Heavener’s Jessica Aguero scored early in the first half.

The game will was tied 1-1 after regulation and the final score will go down as a 2-1 Poteau victory. *******

In the boys game, it to was a tightly contested contest. Poteau (4-4) scored two first-half goals and then their defense was forced to play on their side of the field for a majority of the second half. The Pirates’ defense did a lot of bending but it never broke in the second half.

Eight minutes into the game the first goal was scored by Damien Sanchez, as he converted the ricochet for the Poteau score.

Heavener answered that a minute and a half later. Benny Villanueva essentiall­y scored an open net goal, as the Poteau goalie and a defender knocked each other to the ground.

At the 11-minute mark one of many penalties was called against the Wolves in the box. Eddie Martinez toed the kick into the net. Poteau led 2-1 at the intermissi­on.

Heavener (4-3) kicked it up a notch in the second half. The Pirates never got a good shot on goal and in all reality had trouble crossing midfield.

Johnny Baeza, the Pirates goal keeper turned away five shots on goal in the second period.

Both teams were whistled for numerous fouls and both teams were cited with yellow cards.

Poteau will play Locust Grove at home on Tuesday. Heavener will be at home against Cascia Hall that day.*
