Weather or Not

THE NEWEST OFFERING FROM BOATER’S UNIVERSITY AIMS TO EDUCATE YOU ON WEATHER READING.

-

Many bluewater cruisers have used a weather router at one point or another to plan itineraries, especially to places they’ve never been. But whether you’re cruising to Cape Horn or just zipping around your local waterways, wouldn’t it be nice to think like a weather router? To that end, the AIM Marine Group has partnered with Florida’s Marine Weather Center to produce a new two-part online education course for Boater’s University.

The course is hosted by Chris Parker, a lifelong boater and weather forecaster who has spent the last 15 years providing routing advice for vessels in the Bahamas, Caribbean and the Pacific. “I help people get to their destinations safely and in conditions they’re comfortable with,” says Parker, who has advised physically disabled sailors, parents cruising with young children, serious racers, delivery crews, fishing vessels, tug boats and more. “While I may suggest you consider sailing a specific route for the most favorable conditions, my routing advice goes way beyond that. I try to consider the unique needs of each client.”

The first segment in this course is “Weather 101 Basics,” which is designed for boaters who want to gain a deeper understanding of how and why different weather formations occur. There are also tips on how to find and use the best weather forecasting resources available. The second segment, “Weather 202 Advanced,” will be released later this year. Says Parker, “Together, these courses can help boat owners think more like weather routers and make good decisions on board.”
