The Oldenburg breed (and breed registry) has reinvented itself many times. Located in northwestern Germany, the university city of Vechta is home to the Oldenburger Pferd
ezuchtverband (breeders’ association). Historically, Oldenburg horses were the main carriage horse in Germany. In the early 20th century, the breed shifted more toward agricultural use and then in the mid20th century toward sporthorse production. The American division is known as the Oldenburg Horse Breeder’s Society. Oldenburger Pferdezuchtverband
hosts an annual fall elite auction, which includes award presentations, gala events and horse sales. In 2019, the verband will host its 90th elite auction event.
