For the second straight season, the CIF Southern Section will use the CalPreps rankings to determine the playoff division and seeding for each team that qualifies for the postseason.

Teams will be selected and seeded in the 14 divisions based on their CalPreps rankings, which is a computer-based system that rates teams based on wins and losses and strength of schedule.

Teams will earn automatic playoff berths by league standings or at-large playoff bids based on their CalPreps ranking and power rating at the end of the regular season.

According to CalPreps, all teams begin with a zero rating, however, for 11-man football ratings, “how good the team appears to be entering the season (based on players graduated/back) is a factor in the ratings early in the year in order to improve early-season accuracy of the ratings.”

Ratings in the early to midseason portion of the schedule will be a combination of the current year data and the starting point.

However, those ratings will be updated weekly and after a team has played several games, their starting rating will be completely eliminated from the process and their rating will only be based on their current season.

Here are the CalPreps overall rankings for the 27 Long Beach Press-Telegram area teams as of Monday:
