GAME REPORT

- — Jeff Fletcher

THE GAME: The Angels scored seven runs in the first three innings, when most of their regulars were playing, to beat the Chicago White Sox 7-0 on Sunday in Tempe, Ariz.

PITCHING REPORT: LHP Reid Detmers pitched two scoreless innings, striking out five. He gave up two hits. “Obviously the main goal was just to throw strikes,” Detmers said. “I wasn't out there trying to do anything crazy. I just wanted to go out there and throw strikes, pretty much just land every pitch, and I thought I did that well today and had good results.”… RHP Ben Joyce pitched a perfect inning in his first outing in a big league spring training game. He struck out two and got a broken-bat popup. Joyce's fastball was 96-99 mph. The Angels' third-round pick last summer, Joyce has consistently pitched at more than 100 mph and he's hit 105 mph. Manager Phil Nevin said that plate ump Alfonso Marquez commented to him between innings about Joyce, saying: “Wow, what was that?”… RHP Sam Bachman struck out all three hitters he faced. Bachman's fastball was 96-97mph, which is closer to what he threw in college before seeing his velocity dip after dealing with a back injury last season… RHPs Andrew Wantz, Zack Weiss, Mason Erla and Coleman Crow and LHP José Quijada also pitched scoreless innings... Angels pitchers have allowed one run in their first two games.

HITTING REPORT: Shohei Ohtani swung at the first pitch he saw and drilled a towering drive to right-center. The ball hit the fence, and Ohtani cruised into third with a triple… Taylor Ward pulled a two-run double down the left-field line in the second inning… Mike Trout yanked a ground ball inside the third-base line for a double, driving in a run. Trout also drew a walk… Anthony Rendon and Hunter Renfroe hit back-to-back homers in the third. Rendon also had an RBI single… Andrew Velazquez batted right-handed twice against right-handed pitchers, striking out and grounding out. He said earlier this week that he was going to continue switch-hitting this year. Velazquez experimented with hitting exclusively righthanded just before he suffered a season-ending knee injury last year.

DEFENSE REPORT: Catcher Edgar Quero blocked a ball in the dirt, but Victor Reyes still tried to take an extra base. Quero threw him out easily at second. Quero is a 19-year-old prospect who has played just one full season in the minors… Center fielder Bryce Teodosio made a sliding catch in the ninth inning.
