Padres win, Tatis Jr. hitless in return

-

Trent Grisham had two doubles and four RBIs, Xander Bogaerts added a two-run homer and the visiting San Diego Padres beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 7-5 in Fernando Tatis Jr.'s return from a PED suspension Thursday night.

Tatis was 0 for 5 with two strikeouts in his first regular-season game since 2021, batting leadoff and playing right field.

The 24-year-old Tatis missed all of last season, first because of a broken left wrist and then an 80game PED suspension.

Grisham drove home two runs in the second for a 2-0 lead and had another two-run double in the sixth that made it 7-5.

Tatis was greeted with a mix of cheers and boos in his first at-bats at Chase Field, thanks to a large contingent of Padres fans. METS 9, GIANTS 4 ❯❯ Pete Alonso hit his major league-leading ninth homer and drove in four runs, Eduardo Escobar added a two-run drive to back a milestone night for rookie pitcher Kodai Senga and New York won at San Francisco.

Senga allowed four runs and five hits, struck out four and walked four in five innings to become the second pitcher in franchise history to begin his career 3-0. The Japanese righthander joined Steven Matz, who won his first four decisions in 2015.

ROCKIES 5, PHILLIES 0 ❯❯ Ryan Feltner tossed 5 2/3 scoreless innings, C.J. Cron homered and Colorado snapped an eight-game losing streak with a win at Philadelphia.

Mike Moustakas had an RBI double for the Rockies, who rebounded from getting shelled in a threegame sweep by the Pirates at home in which Pittsburgh outscored the Rockies 33-9 while accumulating 43 hits.

Feltner (1-2) allowed just three hits and only two Phillies got as far as second base against him.

Cron gave Feltner a cushion with a two-run shot in the first off Matt Strahm (1-2), who fanned a career-high 11 in 5 1/3 innings.

RED SOX 11, TWINS 5 ❯❯ Jarren Duran lined one ball off Kenta Maeda's ankle to knock Minnesota's starter from the game and in the next inning sent another ball off the Green Monster to lead Boston to a victory at Fenway Park.

Maeda (0-3) allowed a home run to Alex Verdugo to lead off the bottom of the first and left trailing 1-0 after taking Duran's 111 mph line drive off his left ankle for the last out of the second inning.

Emilio Pagan relieved Maeda and gave up five straight hits, including Duran's two-run double, as Boston opened a 7-0 lead.

Tanner Houck (3-0) scattered four hits over his first six innings but gave up Willi Castro's two-run homer in the seventh.

Maeda, who missed all of last season while recovering from Tommy John surgery, managed to stay on his feet after he was hit by Duran's liner. He retrieved the ball and threw Duran out, then crumpled to the grass.

The Twins training staff rushed out to help him. After a few minutes, he walked off to the dugout. The team said he had a left ankle bruise and was receiving X-rays. PIRATES 4, REDS 3 ❯❯ Connor Joe and Jack Suwinski hit back-to-back homers in the first inning, Roansy Contreras took a shutout into the seventh and Pittsburgh held off visiting Cincinnati.

Joe hit a three-run blast to center off Luke Weaver (0-1) to open the scoring. Suwinski followed with a shot into the right-field stands.

That was all the offense needed for the Pirates who didn't get a hit after the second inning.
