Reds' Greene throws six hitless innings

Hunter Greene threw six hitless innings and the visiting Cincinnati Reds came within six outs of the first no-hitter of the season in a 9-0 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Friday.

Greene (1-4) matched a career high with 11 strikeouts in picking up his first win in 11 starts this season.

There have been 17 no-hitters by Cincinnati, the most recent coming on May 7, 2021, when Wade Miley tossed one against the Cleveland Guardians.

Greene had the Reds in position to add to that list. But the Cubs got their only two hits in the eighth against Eduardo Salazar.

The hard-throwing Greene, out of Sherman Oaks Notre Dame High, walked two while throwing 110 pitches.

Salazar retired all three batters in the seventh before Christophe­r Morel lined a single to center leading off the eighth. Miles Mastrobuon­i singled with one out.

Matt McLain, Spencer Steer, Tyler Stephenson and Stuart Fairchild each had three of Cincinnati's season-high 19 hits.

Adames got hit by a line drive from teammate Brian Anderson in the bottom of the second inning. Video showed Adames appeared to be hit in the head or face. He was taken to an area hospital “just for monitoring purposes,” Brewers manager Craig Counsell said.

PADRES 5, YANKEES 1 » Juan Soto and Fernando Tatis Jr. hit two-run homers, both lingering at home plate to admire no-doubt drives into the second deck, for visiting San Diego. Soto put the Padres ahead in the fifth inning against Randy Vásquez (0-1), who was making his big league debut, and Tatis boosted the lead to 4-0 in the sixth against Ron Marinaccio.

RANGERS 12, ORIOLES 2 » Corey Seager hit his third career grand slam to highlight an eight-run fourth inning for visiting Texas. The Rangers came in averaging a major league-best 6.33 runs, and they showed why during a wild fourth inning that also included a two-run homer by Robbie Grossman and two hits apiece by Josh Jung and Josh Smith.

PHILLIES 6, BRAVES 4 » Craig Kimbrel, 34, became the eighth pitcher in major league history to earn 400 saves and Brandon Marsh hit a go-ahead, tworun single in the sixth inning and for visiting Philadelph­ia. In his 730th career appearance, Kimbrel worked a scoreless ninth for his sixth save in six chances this season.

BLUE JAYS 3, TWINS 1 » Kevin Kiermaier and Bo Bichette homered in a threerun third and Kevin Gausman won for the first time in more than a month for visiting Toronto. The Blue Jays won for just the second time in nine games. Gausman (3-3) allowed a run and struck out eight over 5 1/3 innings.

METS 5, ROCKIES 2 » Francisco Lindor homered and drove in four runs, leading Max Scherzer and visiting New York. Brandon Nimmo tripled twice, walked three times and scored three runs for the Mets. Scherzer (4-2) struck out eight in seven innings of one-run ball.

WHITE SOX 12, TIGERS 3 » Andrew Vaughn hit a two-run homer and drove in three runs and Yoan Moncada also had three RBIs for visiting Chicago. Lance Lynn (4-5) allowed three runs — one earned — on three hits and five walks while striking out five in six innings.

NATIONALS 12, ROYALS 10 » Lane Thomas opened the game with a home run, Corey Dickerson's three-run shot highlighte­d an eight-run sixth inning and Luis Garcia had six hits as visiting Washington outslugged Kansas City. Bobby Witt Jr. had two homers and five RBIs for the Royals.

ASTROS 5, A'S 2 » Hunter Brown struck out a career-high 10 over seven innings and retired 16 straight during one stretch and Corey Julks drove in three runs for visiting Houston. Oakland (10-43) owns the worst 53-game start since 1901.

RED SOX 7, DIAMONDBAC­KS 2 » Chris Sale threw five strong innings and Kiké Hernández smacked a two-run homer and visiting Boston snapped a four-game losing streak. Sale (5-2) allowed one earned run on four hits.

PIRATES 11, MARINERS 6 » Bryan Reynolds had a home run and four RBIs and Jack Suwinski belted two out and drove in three for visiting Pittsburgh, which had 15 hits. Julio Rodriguez had three hits and two RBIs for Seattle.

GUARDIANS 4, CARDINALS 3 » Shane Bieber (4-3) worked into the seventh inning, Amed Rosario hit a three-run double and closer Emmanuel Clase survived another stress-filled ninth inning for host Cleveland.

YANKEES CUT HICKS » Aaron Hicks' eight-year tenure with the New York Yankees ended Friday when the outfielder was released from a contract that had more than 2½ seasons remaining. Hicks was owed about $27.6 million. Hicks was batting .188 with a homer and five RBIs.
