Carroll caps rally as Diamondbacks tie for first place

-

Corbin Carroll had a two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the ninth inning and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Colorado Rockies 6-5 on Thursday to tie the idle Dodgers for a share of the NL West lead.

Gabriel Moreno walked with one out against Pierce Johnson (02), and Ketel Marte doubled with two outs, moving Moreno to third. With first base open and Christian Walker on deck, the Rockies decided to pitch to Carroll, and he came through with a liner for his first career walk-off hit.

The Diamondbacks won their fifth straight and improved to 3423 to match the Dodgers for the best record in the National League.

After Ezequiel Tovar homered to make it 4-2 Rockies in the eighth, Arizona got within a run on Marte's RBI double against Brad Hand. PADRES 10, MARLINS 1 ❯❯ Joe Musgrove pitched a no-hitter into the sixth, Fernando Tatis Jr. had three doubles and four RBIs and visiting San Diego beat Miami.

Recently acquired Gary Sánchez homered for the second consecutive day for the Padres.

Musgrove (3-2) kept Miami hitless until Luis Arraez's infield single. The right-hander allowed a third-inning run, three hits and walked three over six innings.

Sánchez's solo shot in the fifth off Jesús Luzardo (4-4) made it 3-1.

San Diego broke it open and chased Luzardo with a seven-run sixth. Sánchez's two-run double and Tatis' three-RBI double keyed the outburst.

METS 4, PHILLIES 2 ❯❯ Mark Canha hit a go-ahead, two-run homer, Max Scherzer won his third straight decision and New York completed a three-game home sweep of defending NL champion Philadelphia.

The Mets trailed 2-0 before Jeff McNeil hit an RBI single in the third and Canha homered in the fourth against former Met Taijuan Walker (4-3).

The Phillies (25-31) have dropped a season-worst six games under .500 after losing their fourth in a row.

Scherzer (5-2) gave up two runs — one earned — and five hits in seven innings, striking out nine and walking one.

BLUE JAYS 3, BREWERS 1 ❯❯ Kevin Gausman pitched 6 2/3 shutout innings, Bo Bichette and Matt Chapman homered and Toronto beat visiting Milwaukee.

Gausman (4-3) struck out 11, giving him 100 on the season and reclaiming the AL lead from the Angels' Shohei Ohtani (89). Gausman allowed five hits and walked two.

The Brewers have lost five of seven.

Bichette and Chapman both connected off the Brewers' Freddy Peralta (5-5) in a three-run first as Toronto opened June on a winning note after going 11-17 in May.

TWINS 7, GUARDIANS 6 ❯❯ Rookie Royce Lewis hit a tying two-run homer in the eighth and Willi Castro had a game-ending sacrifice fly with the bases loaded in the ninth, lifting Minnesota over Cleveland.

The Guardians were in good shape after Mike Zunino hit a tworun single to cap a five-run sixth inning against Twins starter Pablo López for a 6-3 lead.

After Donovan Solano's RBI double brought the tying run to the plate in the eighth, Lewis smacked a 95-mph fastball from Trevor Stephan into the grass berm behind center field to make it 6-6. Lewis hit his first career home run on May 13, 2022 against Cleveland.

RED SOX 8, REDS 2 ❯❯ Rafael Devers doubled to break an eighth-inning tie and Boston overcame Chris Sale's fourth-inning exit because of left shoulder soreness to beat Cincinnati at Fenway Park.

After the Reds tied it 2-2 in the eighth, Devers doubled in Alex Verdugo after a leadoff walk in the bottom of the inning.

Boston added five more runs in the inning. Ramiel Tapia scored after Kevin Herget (1-2) was called for a balk, Kiké Hernandez singled in two runs and Connor Wong hit a two-run homer.
