Sitting up straight when driving not only helps you avoid ouches, but also keeps you alert and energized. When you slump in your seat, it compresses the discs in your spine, which can lead to lower-back pain, says Alan Hedge, Ph.D., a professor of ergonomics at Cornell University. He suggests adjusting the seat so it’s close to the steering wheel and your back nestles gently against the cushion. To reduce shoulder strain, lower the wheel so your arms are slightly bent.
