CUT­TING

From co­or­di­nat­ing stripe:

• Cut swag ap­pliqué pieces as per

pat­tern and in­struc­tions.

From brown dot:

• Cut 6 (2¼" by fabric width)

bind­ing strips.

From gold print:

• Cut 4 (1½" by fabric width) B strips. • Cut 2 (6½" by fabric width) strips.

Sub­cut into 48 (1½" x 6½") L strips.

From blue print:

• Cut 8 (1½" by fabric width) strips. Sub­cut 2 strips into 48 (1½") A squares. Set aside re­main­ing strip sets us­ing A and H strips. • Cut 1 (4½" by fabric width) strip. Sub­cut into 24 (1½" x 4½")

I rec­tan­gles.

From bur­gundy flo­ral:

• Cut 8 (2½" by fabric width) strips. Sub­cut 7 strips into 104 (2½") F squares. Set aside re­main­ing strip for G.

• Cut 1 (4¼" by fabric width) strip.

Sub­cut into 4 (4¼") P squares. From cream dot:

• Cut 2 (2½" by fabric width) strips. Sub­cut 1 strip into 26 (1½" x 2½") C rec­tan­gles. Set aside re­main­ing strip for A-B-C strip set.

Cut 4 (1½" by fabric width) D strips for strip sets.

Cut 5 (4½" by fabric width) strips. Sub­cut 4 strips into 52 (2½" x 4½")

E rec­tan­gles.

Sub­cut 1 strip into 24 (1½" x 4½")

J strips.

Cut 1 (6½" by fabric width) strip.

Sub­cut into 24 (1½" x 6½") K strips. Cut 5 (1½" by fabric width) strips. Sub­cut into 2 (1½" x 40½") M strips.

Set aside re­main­ing strips for N. Cut 5 (4¼" by fabric width) O strips. • • • • •

COM­PLET­ING THE STAR BLOCKS

1. Sew an A strip to a B strip to make an A-B strip set. Sub­cut strip set into 26 (1½" x 2½") A-B seg­ments as shown in Fig­ure 1. 2. Sew an A strip to one side and a B strip to the op­po­site side of a C strip to make an A-B-C strip set. Sub­cut strip set into 26 (1½" x 4½") A-B-C seg­ments as shown in Fig­ure 2. 3. Sew an A strip to a D strip to make an A-D strip set; re­peat to make a sec­ond A-D strip set. Sub­cut strip sets into 52 (1½" x 2½") A-D seg­ments as shown in Fig­ure 3.

4. Sew a B strip to a D strip to make a B-D strip set. Re­peat to make a sec­ond B-D strip set. Sub­cut strip sets into 52 (1½" x 2½") B-D seg­ments as shown in Fig­ure 4. 5. Se­lect and join two A-B seg­ments to make an A-B unit as shown in Fig­ure 5. Re­peat to make a to­tal of 13 A-B units. 6. Se­lect and join two A-D seg­ments to make an A-D unit as shown in Fig­ure 6. Re­peat to make a to­tal of 26 A-D units. 7. Se­lect and join two B-D seg­ments to make a B-D unit as shown in Fig­ure 7. Re­peat to make a to­tal of 26 B-D units. 8. Draw a di­ag­o­nal line from cor­ner to cor­ner on the wrong side of each F square.

9. Re­fer­ring to Fig­ure 8, place an F square right sides to­gether on one end of an E rec­tan­gle and stitch on the marked line. Trim seam to ¼" and press F to the right side. 10. Re­peat step 9 with a sec­ond F square on the op­po­site end of E to com­plete an E-F unit, again re­fer­ring to Fig­ure 8.

11. Re­peat steps 9 and 10 to make a to­tal of 52 E-F units.

12. To com­plete one Star block, se­lect one A-B unit, two A-B-C seg­ments, two C rec­tan­gles, four E-F units and two each A-D and B-D units.

13. Sew a C rec­tan­gle to op­po­site sides of the A-B unit. Add an

A-B-C seg­ment to the re­main­ing sides of the A-B unit to com­plete the cen­ter unit as shown in Fig­ure 9. 14. Add an E-F unit to each side of the cen­ter unit to com­plete the cen­ter row as shown in Fig­ure 10. 15. Sew a B-D unit to one end and an A-D unit to the op­po­site end of an E-F unit to com­plete the top row as shown in Fig­ure 11. Re­peat to make the bot­tom row. 16. Join the rows to com­plete one Star block as shown in Fig­ure 12. 17. Re­peat steps 12–16 to com­plete a to­tal of 13 Star blocks.

COM­PLET­ING THE FRAME BLOCKS

1. Sew an H strip to op­po­site long sides of the G strip to make a

G-H strip set. Sub­cut strip set into 12 (2½" x 4½") G-H seg­ments as shown in Fig­ure 13. 2. To com­plete one Frame block, se­lect one G-H seg­ment, two each I, J and K strips and four each A squares and L strips.

3. Join the G-H seg­ment with the

I, J, K and L strips and A squares re­fer­ring to Fig­ure 14 to com­plete one Frame block. 4. Re­peat steps 2 and 3 to com­plete a to­tal of 12 Frame blocks.

COM­PLET­ING THE QUILT

1. Join two Frame blocks with three Star blocks to make a Star row re­fer­ring to the As­sem­bly Di­a­gram; press seams to­ward the Frame blocks. Re­peat to make a to­tal of three Star rows.

2. Join two Star blocks and three Frame blocks to make a Frame row; press seams to­ward Frame blocks. Re­peat to make a sec­ond Frame row.

3. Join the rows re­fer­ring to the As­sem­bly Di­a­gram to com­plete the pieced cen­ter; press.

4. Sew M strips to the top and bot­tom of the pieced cen­ter. Join the N strips to make a long strip; sub­cut into two 1½" x 42½" N strips. Sew an N strip to op­po­site sides of the pieced cen­ter.

5. Join the O strips to make a long strip. Sub­cut strip into four 4¼" x 42½" O strips. Sew a strip to op­po­site sides of the pieced cen­ter.

6. Sew a P square to each end of each re­main­ing O strip and sew to the top and bot­tom of the pieced top. 7. Pre­pare a tem­plate for the swag piece and cut as di­rected, adding a ¼" seam al­lowance all around when cut­ting.

8. Turn the seam al­lowance edges of each swag piece to the wrong side and baste to hold.

9. Ar­range and baste three swag pieces on the cen­ter of each O bor­der strip. Ma­chine blan­ket-stitch in place to fin­ish.

10. Cre­ate a quilt sand­wich re­fer­ring to Quilt­ing Basics on page 110.

11. Quilt as de­sired.

12. Bind re­fer­ring to Quilt­ing Basics on page 110 to fin­ish.
