CUT­TING

From red ap­ple print:

• Cut 1 (27/8" by fabric width) strip. Sub­cut strip into 14 (27/8") squares. Cut each square in half on 1 di­ag­o­nal to make 28 C tri­an­gles. Cut 1 (21/2" by fabric width) strip.

Sub­cut strip into 16 (21/2") E squares. Cut 1 (41/4" by fabric width) strip. Sub­cut strip into 10 (41/4") squares. Cut each square on both di­ag­o­nals to make 40 Q tri­an­gles. From yel­low ap­ple print:

• Cut 2 (21/2" by fabric width) strips. Sub­cut strips into 8 (21/2" x 101/2")

N strips.

• Cut 1 (31/2" by fabric width) strip.

Sub­cut strip into 4 (31/2") U squares. • •

• Ba­sic sew­ing tools and sup­plies From red tonal:

• Cut 1 (47/8" by fabric width) strip. Sub­cut strip into 2 (47/8") A squares and 10 (27/8") D squares. Cut each square in half on 1 di­ag­o­nal to make 4 A and 20 D tri­an­gles.

• Cut 1 (41/4" by fabric width) strip. Sub­cut strip into 10 (41/4") squares. Cut each square on both di­ag­o­nals to make 40 S tri­an­gles. Cut 1 (21/2" by fabric width) strip.

Sub­cut strip into 9 (21/2") L squares.

From tan tonal:

• Cut 3 (21/2" by fabric width) strips. Sub­cut strips into 8 (21/2" x 41/2") F rec­tan­gles, 8 (21/2" x 61/2") H rec­tan­gles and 4 (21/2") K squares. • Cut 1 (47/8" by fabric width) strip. Sub­cut strip into 2 (47/8") J squares and 4 (27/8") G squares. Cut each square in half on 1 di­ag­o­nal to make 4 J and 8 G tri­an­gles.

Cut 1 (41/4" by fabric width) strip. Sub­cut strip into 10 (41/4") squares. Cut each square on both di­ag­o­nals to make 40 R tri­an­gles.

From black flo­ral:

• Cut 1 (47/8" by fabric width) strip. Sub­cut strip into 2 (47/8") B squares and 4 (27/8") I squares. Cut each square in half on 1 di­ag­o­nal to make 4 B and 8 I tri­an­gles.

• Cut 1 (21/2" by fabric width) strip. Sub­cut strip into 4 (21/2" x 101/2")

M strips.

• Cut 1 (41/4" by fabric width) strip. Sub­cut strip into 10 (41/4") squares. Cut each square on both di­ag­o­nals to make 40 T tri­an­gles. Cut 5 (21/4" by fabric width) bind­ing strips.

From tan pie print:

• Cut the fol­low­ing along the length of the fabric:

2 (21/2" x 261/2") O strips

2 (21/2" x 301/2") P strips

2 (31/2" x 361/2") B strips

2 (31/2" x 421/2") W strips. • •

COM­PLET­ING THE BLOCKS

1. Draw a di­ag­o­nal line from cor­ner to cor­ner on the wrong side of each E square.

2. Place an E square on one cor­ner of F; stitch on the marked line as shown in Fig­ure 1. Trim seam to 1/4" and press E to the right side, again re­fer­ring to Fig­ure 1. 3. Re­peat Step 2 on the op­po­site end of F to com­plete an E-F unit as shown in Fig­ure 2. 4. Re­peat steps 2 and 3 to com­plete eight E-F units.

5. Sew C to D along the di­ag­o­nal to make a C-D unit as shown in Fig­ure 3; press seam to­ward C. Re­peat to make 20 C-D units. Re­peat with C and G to make eight C-G units. 6. Sew A to B along the di­ag­o­nal to make an A-B unit; press seam to­ward B. Re­peat to make four A-B units.

7. Sew an I tri­an­gle to one end of each H rec­tan­gle to com­plete four each H-I and re­verse H-I units as shown in Fig­ure 4. 8. To com­plete one Bas­ket block, join two C-D units and sew to an A-B unit as shown in Fig­ure 5; press seam in one di­rec­tion and then to­ward the A-B unit. 9. Join three C-D units as shown in Fig­ure 6; press seams in one di­rec­tion. 10. Sew the C-D sec­tion to the A-BC-D unit as shown in Fig­ure 7; press seam away from the C-D sec­tion. 11. Sew a C-G unit to an E-F unit as shown in Fig­ure 8; press seam in one di­rec­tion. Re­peat to make a re­verse C-G-E-F unit. 12. Sew the C-G-E-F unit to the pre­vi­ously pieced unit as shown in Fig­ure 9; press seam to­ward the C-G-E-F unit. 13. Add K to the C-G end of the re­verse C-G-E-F unit and sew to the pre­vi­ously pieced unit as shown in Fig­ure 10; press seam to­ward the K-C-G-E-F unit. 14. Sew H-I and re­verse H-I units to the B sides of the pieced unit as shown in Fig­ure 11; press seams to­ward the H-I units.

15. Sew J to the I cor­ner of the pieced unit to com­plete one Bas­ket block, again re­fer­ring to Fig­ure 11; press seam to­ward J.

16. Re­peat Steps 8–15 to com­plete four Bas­ket blocks.

COM­PLET­ING THE QUILT

1. Join two Bas­ket blocks with one M and two N strips to make a row as shown in Fig­ure 12; press seams to­ward N and M strips. Re­peat to make two rows. 2. Join two N strips with three L squares to make an L-N sash­ing row as shown in Fig­ure 13; press seams to­ward N strips. 3. Join three L squares with one each M and N strip to make an

L-M-N sash­ing row, again re­fer­ring to Fig­ure 13; press seams away from L. Re­peat to make two

L-M-N sash­ing rows.

4. Join the block rows with the sash­ing rows re­fer­ring to Fig­ure 14 to com­plete the pieced cen­ter; press seams to­ward sash­ing rows. 5. Sew an O strip to op­po­site sides and P strips to the top and bot­tom of the pieced cen­ter; press seams to­ward O and P strips.

6. Sew Q to R as shown in Fig­ure 15; press seam to­ward Q. Re­peat to make 40 Q-R units. 7. Join two Q-R units as shown in Fig­ure 16 to com­plete a Q-R sec­tion; press seam in one di­rec­tion. Re­peat to make 20 Q-R sec­tions. 8. Re­peat Steps 6 and 7 with S and T to com­plete 20 S-T sec­tions re­fer­ring to Fig­ure 17. Press seams to­ward T and in one di­rec­tion. 9. Join five each Q-R and S-T sec­tions to make a strip as shown in Fig­ure 18; press seams in one di­rec­tion. Re­peat to make four strips. 10. Sew a strip to op­po­site sides of the pieced cen­ter; press seams to­ward O strips.

11. Sew a U square to each end of each re­main­ing pieced strip; press seams away from U.

12. Sew the U strips to the top and bot­tom of the pieced cen­ter; press seams to­ward the P strips.

13. Sew a V strip to op­po­site sides and W strips to the top and bot­tom of the pieced cen­ter; press seams to­ward V and W strips to com­plete the top.

14. Cre­ate a quilt sand­wich re­fer­ring to Quilt­ing Basics on page 110.

15. Quilt as de­sired. Trim edges even.

16. Bind edges re­fer­ring to Quilt­ing Basics on page 110 to fin­ish.
