Create a quilt that resembles Moroccan floor tiles.

A quilt inspired by floor tiles.

MATERIALS

• 3/ 8 yard purple tonal • 5/ 8 yard medium blue tonal • 13/4 yards light blue tonal • 17/ 8 yards dark blue tonal • Backing to size • Batting to size • Thread • Basic sewing tools and supplies

CUTTING

From purple tonal: • Cut 2 (47/ 8" by fabric width) strips. Subcut strips into 10 (47/ 8") E squares,

4 (41/2") B squares and 4 (21/2") F squares. From medium blue tonal: • Cut 1 (47/ 8" by fabric width) strip. Subcut strip into 4 (47/ 8") K squares

and 4 (41/2") D squares. • Cut 1 (41/2" by fabric width) strip. Subcut strip into 8 (41/2") D squares

(to total 12 D squares). • Cut 2 (21/2" by fabric width) strips.

Subcut strips into 28 (21/2") J squares. From light blue tonal: • Cut 1 (47/ 8" by fabric width) strip. Subcut strip into 6 (47/ 8") H squares

and 4 (21/2" x 41/2") I rectangles. • Cut 2 (41/2" by fabric width) strips.

Subcut strips into 16 (41/2") C squares. • Cut 3 (21/2" by fabric width) strips.

Subcut strips into 36 (21/2") G squares. • Cut 5 (6" by fabric width) O/P strips. From dark blue tonal: • Cut 4 (21/2" by fabric width) strips.

Subcut strips into 52 (21/2") L squares. • Cut 5 (41/2" by fabric width) strips. Subcut strips into 28 each 41/2" A squares

and 21/2" x 41/2" M rectangles. • Cut 1 (47/ 8" by fabric width) strip.

Subcut strip into 8 (47/ 8") N squares. • Cut 6 (21/4" by fabric width) binding strips.

COMPLETING THE PIECED UNITS

1. Select one each G and L square and one M rectangle. 2. Sew G to L and add M to make a G-L-M unit as shown in Figure 1; press. Repeat to make a total of 10 G-L-M units.

Repeat steps 1 and 2 to make 10 reverse G-L-M units, again referring to Figure 1. 4. Repeat step 2 with J and L squares and I rectangles to make two each I-J-L and reverse I-J-L units referring to Figure 2.

Repeat step 2 with G and J squares and M rectangles to make four each G-J-M and reverse G-J-M units referring to Figure 3. 6. Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of each E and K square and the remaining F,G, J and L squares. 7. Referring to Figure 4, place an E square right sides together with an N square and stitch 1/4" on each side of the marked line. Cut apart on the marked line; press open to complete two E-N units. Repeat to make a total of 12 E-N units. 8. Repeat step 7 with E and H, H and K, and K and N to make eight E-H units and four each H-K and K-N units as shown in Figure 5.

9. Referring to Figure 6, place a marked L square right sides together on the E corner and a marked J square on the N corner of an E-N unit and stitch on the marked lines. Trim seam allowances to 1/4" and press L and J to the right side to complete one E-J-L-N unit. Repeat to make a total of eight E-J-L-N units.

10. Repeat step 9 with the remaining E-N, E-H, H-K and K-N units and the marked F,G, J and L squares to complete the remaining pieced units referring to Figure 7 for the color combinatio­ns and number to make of each combinatio­n.

COMPLETING THE QUILT

Refer to the Assembly Diagram for row assembly and joining rows.

1. Arrange and join the A,B, C and D squares and the pieced units in 12 horizontal rows of 10 squares/units per row; press.

2. Join the rows to complete the pieced center; press.

3. Join the O/P strips on the short ends to make one long strip; press. Subcut strip into two each 6" x 401/2" O strips and 6" x 591/2" P strips.

4. Sew O strips to the top and bottom, and P strips to opposite long sides of the pieced center to complete the quilt top; press.

5. Create a quilt sandwich referring to Quilting Basics on page 94. 6. Quilt as desired. 7. Bind edges referring to Quilting Basics on page 94 to finish.
