Winter Welcome Wall Hanging

Nothing says “welcome” like a cute wall hanging by the door.

Try an appliqué project with felted wool.

MATERIALS

• Scraps black, pink and orange felted

wool* • 12" square each white and blue

felted wool* • 4" x 14" scrap red felted wool* • 3/ 8 yard light gray tonal • 1/2 yard dark gray tonal • Backing to size • Batting to size • Thread • Embroidery floss to match felted

wool • Appliqué pins or appliqué glue

(optional) • Basic sewing tools and supplies *One-hundred percent felted wool from Moda used to make sample.

CUTTING

Cut appliqué pieces as per instructio­ns using patterns given. From red felted wool: • Cut 1 strip each 11/4" x 51/4" and 11/2" x 12" for scarf pieces. From light gray tonal: • Cut 1 (91/2" by fabric width) strip. Subcut strip into 1 (91/2" x 201/2") A rectangle. From dark gray tonal: • Cut 2 (2" by fabric width) strips. Subcut strips into 2 each 2" x 231/2" C and 2" x 91/2" B strips. • Cut 3 (21/4" by fabric width) binding strips.

COMPLETING THE WALL HANGING

1. Sew B strips to opposite short ends and C strips to opposite long sides of A as shown in Figure 1; press.

2. Arrange and pin the snowflake circles on the bordered background referring to the Placement Diagram for positionin­g.

3. Stitch in place using 1 strand of white embroidery floss and an overcast stitch.

4. Arrange and pin the “Welcome” letters through the vertical center, extending the top of “W” into the top B border strip, referring to Figure 2. Stitch each letter in place using 1 strand of blue embroidery floss and an overcast stitch.

5. Arrange and pin the head piece 1" above the seam between the bottom B strip and A as shown in Figure 3. Stitch in place using 1 strand of white embroidery floss and an overcast stitch.

6. Arrange and pin the eye, cheek and nose pieces to the head as per motif. Stitch each piece in place with 1 strand of matching embroidery floss and an overcast stitch.

7. Using 2 strands of white embroidery floss, work a running stitch ¼" from each long edge of each scarf piece.
