Here’s My Heart
Make a lovely baby quilt for the next shower you’re invited to. It’s easy to piece and a great stash buster.
Make this lovely baby quilt.
MATERIALS
• 1/ 8 yard total assorted dark pink prints • 3/4 yard total assorted light/medium pink prints • 21/4 yards total assorted gray-with
white or gray-with- cream prints • Backing to size • Batting to size • Thread • Basic sewing tools and supplies
CUTTING
From assorted dark pink prints: • Cut 8 (3") F squares. • Cut 4 (21/2") G squares. From assorted light/medium pink prints: • Cut 12 (3") D squares. • Cut 6 (21/2") E squares. • Cut an assortment of 21/4"-wide strips 20"–30" long to make 184" length when joined for binding.
From assorted gray-with-white or gray-with-cream prints:
• Cut 90 (41/2") A squares. • Cut 16 (3") B squares. • Cut 44 (21/2") C squares.
COMPLETING THE QUILT
Refer to the Assembly Diagram for quilt layout in steps 7–9. 1. Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of each B square and on two of the D squares. 2. Pair 10 of the B squares with 10 unmarked D squares; pin each pair right sides together with marked line on top. 3. Pair the remaining six B squares with six of the F squares as in step 2. 4. Pair the marked D squares with the remaining F squares as in step 2. 5. Select one pinned unit and, referring to Figure 1, stitch 1/4" on both sides of the marked line. Cut apart on the line and press open to make two units. Repeat with all pinned sets to make a total of 20 B-D, 12 B-F and four D-F units.
6. Referring to Figure 2, arrange and join the C, E and G squares with the pieced units in vertical rows to make the heart row; press.
7. Arrange and join nine A squares to make an A row; press. Repeat to make a total of 10 A rows.
8. Sew an A row to the top and bottom of the heart row; press.
9. Sew the remaining eight A rows to the bottom of the bordered heart row to complete the pieced top; press.
10. Create a quilt sandwich referring to Quilting Basics on page 94. 11. Quilt as desired. 12. Bind edges referring to Quilting Basics on page 94 to finish.
