Origami Pin­wheels

This in­ter­est­ing block gives the il­lu­sion of folded pin­wheels when the color val­ues are placed a cer­tain way.

• 12/ 3 yards black paw print* • 17/ 8 yards gray cat print* • 21/4 yards white cat print* • Back­ing to size • Bat­ting to size • Thread • Tem­plate ma­te­rial • Ba­sic sewing tools and sup­plies *Full Moon fab­ric col­lec­tion from Hoff­man used to make sam­ple.

CUT­TING

Pre­pare tem­plate for A/B-C us­ing pat­tern given.

From black paw print:

• Cut 3 (2" by fab­ric width) C1 strips. • Cut 2 (61/2" by fab­ric width) A2 strips. Sub­cut strips into 16 A2 tri­an­gles us­ing tem­plate and re­fer­ring to Fig­ure 1. • Cut 5 (21/2" by fab­ric width) H/J strips. • Cut 7 (21/4" by fab­ric width) bind­ing strips.

From gray cat print:

• Cut 2 (61/2" by fab­ric width) A1 strips. Sub­cut strips into 20 A1 tri­an­gles us­ing tem­plate and again re­fer­ring to Fig­ure 1. • Cut 1 (21/2" by fab­ric width) strip.

Sub­cut strip into 4 (21/2") L squares. • Cut 3 (2" by fab­ric width) C2 strips. • Cut 6 (51/2" by fab­ric width) N/O strips. From white cat print: • Cut 7 (51/4" by fab­ric width) B strips. • Cut 4 (21/2" x 401/2") E strips. • Cut 2 (21/2" by fab­ric width) strips. Sub­cut strips into 6 (21/2" x 121/2" F strips

and 4 (21/2") I squares. • Cut 8 (21/2" by fab­ric width) G/K/M strips.

COM­PLET­ING THE GRAY SPIDERWEB BLOCKS

1. Sew a B strip to a C1 strip with right sides to­gether along length to make a B-C1 strip set; press. Re­peat to make a to­tal of three strip sets. 2. Place the tem­plate on a strip set, align­ing the B-C line on the tem­plate with the seam on the strip as shown in Fig­ure 2; cut around the tem­plate. 3. Re­peat to cut a to­tal of 20 B-C1 units. 4. To com­plete one Gray Spiderweb block, se­lect four each A1, B-C1 and D pieces.

5. Sew a D tri­an­gle to an A1 tri­an­gle to make an A1-D unit as shown in Fig­ure 3; press. Re­peat to make a to­tal of four A1-D units.

6. Join one A1-D unit with a B-C1 unit to make a block quar­ter as shown in Fig­ure 4; press. Re­peat to make a to­tal of four block quar­ters.

7. Join two block quar­ters to make a half­block as shown in Fig­ure 5; press. Re­peat to make a sec­ond half-block.

8. Join the two half-blocks to com­plete one Gray Spiderweb block as shown in Fig­ure 6; press. 9. Re­peat steps 4–8 to com­plete a to­tal of five Gray Spiderweb blocks.

COM­PLET­ING THE BLACK SPIDERWEB BLOCKS

1. Re­peat step 1 of Com­plet­ing the Gray Spiderweb Blocks with B and C2 strips to make three B-C2 strip sets.

2. Sub­cut the B-C2 strip sets into 16 B-C2 units as shown in Fig­ure 7.

3. Re­peat steps 5–8 of Com­plet­ing the Gray Spiderweb Blocks to make a to­tal of four Black Spiderweb blocks us­ing four each A2, B-C2 and D pieces for each block as shown in Fig­ure 8.

COM­PLET­ING THE QUILT

Re­fer to the As­sem­bly Di­a­gram for con­struc­tion steps.

1. Join one Black Spiderweb block with two Gray Spiderweb blocks and two F strips to make the top row; press. Re­peat to make the bot­tom row.

2. Join one Gray Spiderweb block with two Black Spiderweb blocks and two F strips to make the cen­ter row; press.

3. Join the rows with four E strips to com­plete the pieced cen­ter, be­gin­ning and end­ing with an E strip; press.

4. Join the G/K/M strips on the short ends to make one long strip; press. Sub­cut strip into two each 21/2" x 441/2" G strips, 21/2" x 481/2" K strips and 21/2" x 521/2" M strips.

5. Sew G strips to op­po­site long sides of the pieced cen­ter; press.

6. Join the H/J strips on the short ends to make one long strip; press. Sub­cut strip into two each 21/2" x 441/2" H strips and 21/2" x 481/2" J strips.

7. Sew H strips to the top and bot­tom of the pieced cen­ter; press.

8. Draw a di­ag­o­nal line from cor­ner to cor­ner on the wrong side of each I and L square.

9. Re­fer­ring to Fig­ure 9, place an I square right sides to­gether on each end of J; stitch on the marked lines. Cut 1/4" from marked lines and press I pieces to the right side to com­plete an I-J strip. Re­peat to make a sec­ond I-J strip.

10. Sew an I-J strip to op­po­site sides of the pieced cen­ter; press.

11. Re­peat step 9 us­ing M strips and L squares to make two L-M strips. Sew K strips to the top and bot­tom, and L-M strips to op­po­site sides of the pieced cen­ter.

12. Join the N/O strips on the short ends to make one long strip; press. Sub­cut strip into two each 51/2" x 521/2" N strips and 51/2" x 621/2" O strips.

13. Sew N strips to the top and bot­tom and O strips to op­po­site sides of the pieced cen­ter to com­plete the quilt top; press.

14. Cre­ate a quilt sand­wich re­fer­ring to Quilt­ing Ba­sics on page 94. 15. Quilt as de­sired. 16. Bind edges re­fer­ring to Quilt­ing Ba­sics on page 94 to fin­ish.
