# Cats on Parade

## Here’s a great easy-pieced pattern that’s perfect for large-scale prints.

MATERIALS

• 1 cat block panel ( 2/ 3 yard) or

6 (101/2") cat squares* • 5/ 8 yard black tonal* • 2/ 3 yard pink/purple tonal* • 1 yard dark purple tonal* • 11/ 8 yards aqua tonal* • 11/ 8 yards purple paisley print* • Backing to size • Batting to size • Thread • Basic sewing tools and supplies *Cat- I-Tude fabric collection by Ann Lauer for Benartex used to make sample.

CUTTING From cat block panel:

• Fussy- cut 4 purple and 2 aqua (101/2") C squares, centering cats in the squares.

From black tonal:

• Cut 3 (51/2" by fabric width) strips. Subcut strips into 7 (51/2" x 101/2") Q rectangles and 2 (51/2") G squares.

From pink/purple tonal:

• Cut 6 (3" by fabric width) strips. Subcut strips into 14 (3" x 8") E rectangles, 6 (3" x 51/2") H rectangles and 28 (3") A squares.

From dark purple tonal:

• Cut 6 (11/2" by fabric width) M/N strips. • Cut 7 (21/4" by fabric width) binding strips.

From aqua tonal:

• Cut 6 (3" by fabric width) strips. Subcut strips into 17 (3" x 8") D rectangles, 3 (3" x 51/2") I rectangles and 21 (3") B squares. • Cut 5 (21/2" by fabric width) K/L strips. From purple paisley print: • Cut 1 (51/2" by fabric width) strip. Subcut strip into 6 (51/2") F squares and

2 (3") R squares. • Cut 1 (3" by fabric width) strip. Subcut strip into 7 (3" x 51/2") J

rectangles. • Cut 6 (41/2" by fabric width) O/P strips.

COMPLETING THE CAT BLOCKS

1. Mark a diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of 22 A squares and 18 B squares. 2. Referring to Figure 1, place an A square right sides together on one corner of a purple C square; stitch on the marked line, trim seam to 1/4" and press A to the right side.

3. Repeat step 2 on the remaining corners of C to complete one Purple Cat block as shown in Figure 2.

4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 to complete a total of four Purple Cat blocks.

5. Repeat steps 2 and 3 with B squares and the C squares to make two Aqua Cat blocks.

COMPLETING THE TWIST BLOCKS

1. To complete one Twist block, select one F square and two each D and E rectangles. 2. Sew D to F, stopping stitching 2" from the end of F as shown in Figure 3; press. 3. Sew E to the stitched edge of the D-F unit as shown in Figure 4; press. 4. Sew D and then E to the stitched unit as shown in Figure 5; press.

5. Complete the partial seam using the unstitched D rectangle end to complete one Twist block; press.

6. Repeat steps 1–5 to complete a total of six Twist blocks.

COMPLETING THE EDGE & CORNER UNITS

1. Referring to Figure 6, place a marked A square right sides together on two corners of Q and stitch on the marked lines, trim seams to 1/4" and press A to the right side to complete one A-Q unit. Repeat to make a total of three A-Q units.

2. Repeat step 1 using B squares and Q rectangles to make four B-Q units as shown in Figure 7.

3. Place one marked B square on one corner of G and stitch as in step 1 to complete a G corner unit as shown in Figure 8. Repeat to make a second G corner unit.

4. Sew an unmarked B square to an R square and add H to make an H corner unit as shown in Figure 9; press.

5. Repeat step 4 with an unmarked A square and R square and an I rectangle to make an I corner unit as shown in Figure 10; press.

6. Sew B to J and add E and then I to make one B edge unit as shown in Figure 11; press. Repeat to make a second B edge unit.

7. Sew J to A and add D and then H to make an A edge unit as shown in Figure 12; press. Repeat to make a total of five A edge units.

COMPLETING THE QUILT

Refer to Figure 13 for creating all rows and the Assembly Diagram to add borders.

1. Arrange and join one each H and I corner unit, one B edge unit and two A-Q units to make the top row; press.

2. Arrange and join two B-Q units with one Aqua Cat block and two Twist blocks to make row 2; press.

3. Arrange and join one each A and B edge unit, one Twist block and two Purple Cat blocks to make row 3; press.

4. Arrange and join one each A-Q and B-Q unit with one Aqua Cat block and two Twist blocks to make row 4; press.

5. Arrange and join two A edge units with one Twist block and two Purple Cat blocks to make row 5; press.

6. Arrange and join two G corner units with one B-Q unit and two A edge units to make the bottom row; press.

7. Arrange and join the rows in numerical order to complete the pieced center; press.

8. Join the K/L strips on the short ends to make one long strip; press. Subcut strip into two each 21/2" x 501/2" K strips and 21/2" x 441/2" L strips.

9. Sew K strips to opposite long sides and L strips to the top and bottom of the pieced center; press.

10. Join the M/N strips on the short ends to make one long strip; press. Subcut strip into two each 11/2" x 541/2" M strips and 11/2" x 461/2" N strips.

11. Sew M strips to opposite long sides and N strips to the top and bottom of the pieced center; press.

12. Join the O/P strips on the short ends to make one long strip; press. Subcut strip into two each 41/2" x 561/2" O strips and 41/2" x 541/2" P strips.

13. Sew O strips to opposite long sides and P strips to the top and bottom of the pieced center to complete the quilt top; press.

14. Create a quilt sandwich referring to Quilting Basics on page 94. 15. Quilt as desired. 16. Bind edges referring to Quilting Basics on page 94 to finish.
