orange/yellow prints or batiks • 22 assorted 41/2" A squares cream
prints or batiks • 1 fat eighth each yellow/orange, gold/orange, orange/red, green and gold/brown prints or batiks • 1/ 8 yard red/orange batik • 1/4 yard yellow/gold batik • 3/ 8 yard yellow/orange check batik • 1/2 yard black batik • Backing to size • Batting to size • Thread • 7/ 8 yard 17"-wide fusible web* • 1 package black 1/4"- wide baby
rickrack* • Template material • Basic sewing tools and supplies *Wonder-Under® fusible web from Pellon; Wrights baby rickrack used to make sample.
Prepare the appliqué pieces for fusible appliqué using patterns given and referring to Raw-Edge Fusible Appliqué on page 30. From red/orange batik: • Cut 3 (1" by fabric width) B/C strips. Subcut 1 strip into 2 (1" x 91/2") C strips. Set aside remainder of strip and remaining strips for B. From yellow/gold batik: • Cut 3 (11/2" by fabric width) D/E strips. Subcut 1 strip into 2 (11/2" x 111/2") E strips. Set aside remainder of strip and remaining strips for D. From yellow/orange check batik: • Cut 4 (21/4" by fabric width) binding strips. From black batik: • Cut 4 (31/2" by fabric width) F/G strips. Subcut 1 strip into 2 (31/2" x 171/2") G strips. Set aside remainder of strip and remaining strips for F.
COMPLETING THE RUNNER BACKGROUND
Refer to the Placement Diagram as needed for all construction steps. 1. Arrange and join 11 A squares side to side to make an A strip; press. Repeat to make a second A strip. 2. Join the two A strips to complete the pieced center; press. 3. Join the B strips on the short ends to make one long strip; press. Subcut strip into two 1" x 441/2" B strips. 4. Sew B strips to opposite long sides and C strips to each short end of the pieced center; press. 5. Repeat step 3 with the D strips to cut two 11/2" x 451/2" D strips. Sew D strips to opposite long sides and E strips to the short ends of the pieced center; press. 6. Repeat step 3 with the F strips to cut two 31/2" x 471/2" F strips. Sew F strips to opposite long sides and G strips to the short ends of the pieced center to complete the runner background; press.
COMPLETING THE APPLIQUÉ & RUNNER
Refer to the Placement Diagram as needed. 1. Arrange and fuse the prepared pumpkin motifs and leaf pieces on the runner background, using the iron tip to fuse just the center of each piece while leaving outer edges unfused. 2. Referring to Figure 1, tuck the rickrack under the unfused edges of the fused pieces, curving the rickrack and trimming to size as desired; pin to hold. 3. Stitch the rickrack pieces in place through the center of the rickrack as shown in Figure 2.
4. Fuse the edges of the appliqué pieces in place all around to cover the ends of the rickrack.
5. Stitch edges of fused shapes in place referring to Raw-Edge Fusible Appliqué.
6. Create a quilt sandwich referring to Quilting Basics on page 94. 7. Quilt as desired. 8. Stitch vein lines on leaves as marked on the pattern. Add indentation lines on the pumpkins as desired.
9. Bind edges referring to Quilting Basics on page 94 to finish.
