Wind­ing Au­tumn Paths

Cre­ate an in­ter­est­ing de­sign with this one block by twist­ing and turn­ing it un­til you have a fun place­ment. Cre­ate your own wind­ing paths.

MA­TE­RI­ALS

• 2/ 3 yard green batik • 21/4 yards to­tal as­sorted batik scraps • 33/ 8 yards cream batik • Back­ing to size • Bat­ting to size • Thread • Ba­sic sewing tools and sup­plies

CUT­TING

From green batik: • Cut 8 (21/4" by fab­ric width) bind­ing strips. From as­sorted batik scraps: • Cut 105 (47/ 8") squares. Cut each square in half on 1 di­ag­o­nal to

make 210 A tri­an­gles. From cream batik: • Cut 7 (47/ 8" by fab­ric width) strips. Sub­cut strips into 53 (47/ 8") squares. Cut each square in half on 1 di­ag­o­nal to make 106 B tri­an­gles. Dis­card 1. • Cut 6 (127/ 8" by fab­ric width) strips. Sub­cut strips into 18 (127/ 8") squares. Cut each square in half on 1 di­ag­o­nal to make 36 C tri­an­gles. Dis­card 1.

COM­PLET­ING THE BLOCKS

1. Sew B to A along the di­ag­o­nal to make an A-B unit as shown in Fig­ure 1; press. Re­peat to make a to­tal of 105 A-B units.

2. To com­plete one Wind­ing Au­tumn Paths block, se­lect three each A-B units and A tri­an­gles, and one C tri­an­gle. 3. Join two A-B units with one A tri­an­gle to make a row as shown in Fig­ure 2; press. 4. Sew one A-B unit to one A tri­an­gle to make a row as shown in Fig­ure 3; press. 5. Join the two rows and add an A tri­an­gle to com­plete the pieced sec­tion as shown in Fig­ure 4; press. 6. Sew the C tri­an­gle to the pieced sec­tion to com­plete one Wind­ing Au­tumn Paths block re­fer­ring to the block draw­ing; press. 7. Re­peat steps 2–6 to com­plete a to­tal of 35 Wind­ing Au­tumn Paths blocks.
