Winding Autumn Paths
Create an interesting design with this one block by twisting and turning it until you have a fun placement. Create your own winding paths.
Twist and turn these blocks for a unique look.
• 2/ 3 yard green batik • 21/4 yards total assorted batik scraps • 33/ 8 yards cream batik • Backing to size • Batting to size • Thread • Basic sewing tools and supplies
From green batik: • Cut 8 (21/4" by fabric width) binding strips. From assorted batik scraps: • Cut 105 (47/ 8") squares. Cut each square in half on 1 diagonal to
make 210 A triangles. From cream batik: • Cut 7 (47/ 8" by fabric width) strips. Subcut strips into 53 (47/ 8") squares. Cut each square in half on 1 diagonal to make 106 B triangles. Discard 1. • Cut 6 (127/ 8" by fabric width) strips. Subcut strips into 18 (127/ 8") squares. Cut each square in half on 1 diagonal to make 36 C triangles. Discard 1.
COMPLETING THE BLOCKS
1. Sew B to A along the diagonal to make an A-B unit as shown in Figure 1; press. Repeat to make a total of 105 A-B units.
2. To complete one Winding Autumn Paths block, select three each A-B units and A triangles, and one C triangle. 3. Join two A-B units with one A triangle to make a row as shown in Figure 2; press. 4. Sew one A-B unit to one A triangle to make a row as shown in Figure 3; press. 5. Join the two rows and add an A triangle to complete the pieced section as shown in Figure 4; press. 6. Sew the C triangle to the pieced section to complete one Winding Autumn Paths block referring to the block drawing; press. 7. Repeat steps 2–6 to complete a total of 35 Winding Autumn Paths blocks.
