MATERIALS

• 1 yard cream tonal* • 1 yard black/brown mottled* • 11/ 8 yards cream/gray mottled* • 11/4 yards gray/brown/cream mottled* • 2 yards black tonal* • Backing to size • Batting to size • Thread • Basic sewing tools and supplies

*Stonehenge fabric collection from Northcott used to make sample.

CUTTING From cream tonal:

• Cut 7 (27/ 8" by fabric width) strips.

Subcut strips into 88 (27/ 8") C squares. • Cut 2 (21/2" by fabric width) strips.

Subcut strips into 32 (21/2") G squares.

From black/brown mottled:

• Cut 2 (21/2" by fabric width) strips. Subcut strips into 32 (21/2") I squares. • Cut 7 (27/ 8" by fabric width) strips. Subcut strips into 82 (27/ 8") J squares and 4 (21/2") I squares (to total 36 I squares).

From cream/gray mottled:

• Cut 6 (21/2" by fabric width) strips.

Subcut strips into 96 (21/2") D squares. • Cut 5 (27/ 8" by fabric width) strips.

Subcut strips into 60 (27/ 8") E squares.

From gray/brown/cream mottled:

• Cut 1 (21/2" by fabric width) strip. Subcut strip into 16 (21/2") A squares. • Cut 3 (27/ 8" by fabric width) strips.

Subcut strips into 32 (27/ 8") B squares. • Cut 6 (31/2" by fabric width) M/N strips. From black tonal: • Cut 10 (27/ 8" by fabric width) strips.

Subcut strips into 118 (27/ 8") F squares. • Cut 1 (21/2" by fabric width) strip.

Subcut strip into 16 (21/2") H squares. • Cut 5 (2" by fabric width) K/L strips. • Cut 6 (21/4" by fabric width) binding strips.

COMPLETING THE HALF- SQUARE TRIANGLE UNITS

1. Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of each C and E square and 42 F squares. 2. Referring to Figure 1, place a C square right sides together with B square and stitch 1/4" on each side of the marked line. Cut apart on the marked line and press open with seam toward B to complete two B-C units. Repeat to complete a total of 32 B-C units. 3. Repeat step 2 with B and marked F squares to make 32 B-F units; with C and unmarked F squares to make 72 C-F units; with C and J to make 72 C-J units; with E and unmarked F squares to make 80 E-F units; with E and J to make 40 E-J units; and with marked F squares and J to make 52 F-J units referring to Figure 2. Press seams toward darker fabric.

COMPLETING THE STAR BLOCKS

1. Select one I and four D squares, one F-J unit, two each C-F, C-J and E-J units, and four E-F units.

2. Arrange and join the units and squares in four rows of four squares/units each referring to Figure 3; press adjoining rows in opposite directions. 3. Join the rows to complete one block quarter as shown in Figure 4; press.

4. Repeat steps 1–3 to make a total of 20 block quarters.

5. To complete one Star block, select four block quarters. Join two block quarters to make a row as shown in Figure 5; press. Repeat to make a second row. 6. Join the rows to complete one Star block as shown in Figure 6; press. 7. Repeat steps 5 and 6 to complete a total of five Star blocks.

COMPLETING THE FRAME BLOCKS

1. Select one each A, D, H and I square, two G squares, and two each B-C, B-F, C-F, C-J and F-J units.

2. Arrange and join the units and squares in four rows of four squares/units each referring to Figure 7; press adjoining rows in opposite directions.

3. Join the rows to complete one block quarter as shown in Figure 8; press.

4. Repeat steps 1–3 to make a total of 16 block quarters.

5. To complete one Frame block, select four block quarters. Join two block quarters to make a row as shown in Figure 9; press. Repeat to make a second row. 6. Join the rows to complete one Frame block as shown in Figure 10; press. 7. Repeat steps 5 and 6 to complete a total of four Frame blocks.

COMPLETING THE QUILT

Refer to the Assembly Diagram for constructi­on steps.

1. Arrange and join one Frame block and two Star blocks to make the top row; press. Repeat to make the bottom row.

2. Arrange and join one Star block and two Frame blocks to make the center row; press.

3. Sew the center row between the top and bottom rows to complete the pieced center; press.

4. Join the K/L strips on the short ends to make one long strip; press. Subcut strip into two each 2" x 481/2" K strips and 2" x 511/2" L strips.

5. Sew K strips to opposite sides and L strips to the top and bottom of the pieced center; press.

6. Join the M/N strips on the short ends to make one long strip; press. Subcut strip into two each 31/2" x 511/2" M strips and 31/2" x 571/2" N strips.

7. Sew M strips to opposite sides and N strips to the top and bottom of the pieced center to complete the quilt top; press.

8. Create a quilt sandwich referring to Quilting Basics on page 102. 9. Quilt as desired.

10. Bind edges referring to Quilting Basics on page 102 to finish.
