Rolling Stone Baby Quilt

Make an adorable baby quilt.

MATERIALS

• 1/2 yard orange/pink batik* • 1 yard light pink batik* • 1 yard medium pink batik* • 11/ 8 yards white batik* • 11/ 8 yards dark pink batik* • Backing to size • Batting to size* • Thread • Basic sewing tools and supplies *British Rose fabric collection from Island Batiks; Soft & Bright batting from The Warm Company used to make sample.

CUTTING

From orange/pink batik: • Cut 2 (25/ 8" by fabric width) strips. Subcut strips into 28 (25/ 8") D1 squares. • Cut 2 (31/2" by fabric width) strips. Subcut strips into 28 (2" x 31/2") F1 rectangles. From light pink batik: • Cut 2 (31/2" by fabric width) strips.

Subcut strips into 20 (31/2") A squares. • Cut 8 (23/ 8" by fabric width) strips. Subcut strips into 120 (23/ 8") squares. Cut each square in half on 1 diagonal to make 240 E triangles. From medium pink batik: • Cut 1 (25/ 8" by fabric width) strip. Subcut strip into 15 (25/ 8") D3 squares. • Cut 2 (31/2" by fabric width) strips. Subcut strips into 24 (2" x 31/2") F3 rectangles and 9 (25/ 8") D3 squares (24 total). • Cut 6 (21/4" by fabric width) binding strips. From white batik: • Cut 4 (31/2" by fabric width) strips. Subcut strips into 80 (2" x 31/2")

B rectangles. • Cut 3 (23/ 8" by fabric width) strips. Subcut strips into 40 (23/ 8") squares. Cut each square in half on 1 diagonal to make 80 C triangles. • Cut 5 (11/2" by fabric width) G/H strips. From dark pink batik: • Cut 2 (25/ 8" by fabric width) strips.

Subcut strips into 28 (25/ 8") D2 squares. • Cut 2 (31/2" by fabric width) strips. Subcut strips into 28 (2" x 31/2")

F2 rectangles. • Cut 5 (31/2" by fabric width) I/J strips.

COMPLETING THE ROLLING STONE BLOCKS

1. Sew an E triangle to three sides of the D1 square and add one C triangle to make a block 1 corner unit as shown in Figure 1; press. Repeat to make a total of 28 block 1 corner units.

When the theme ‘think outside the box’ was proposed, I thought of thinking outside the QUBE. The Rolling Stone block is a 1.5 size block, so it would be 9" finished. So, I am thinking outside the QUBE box!” —Bea Lee

2. Sew B to F1 to complete a block 1 side unit as shown in Figure 2; press. Repeat to make a total of 28 block 1 side units.

3. To complete one Rolling Stone 1 block, select one A square and four each block 1 side and corner units.

4. Sew a side unit to opposite sides of A to complete the center row as shown in Figure 3; press.

5. Sew a corner unit to opposite sides of a side unit to complete the top row as shown in Figure 4; press. Repeat to make the bottom row.

6. Sew the center row between the top and bottom rows to complete one Rolling Stone 1 block as shown in Figure 5; press.

7. Repeat steps 3–6 to complete a total of seven Rolling Stone 1 blocks.

8. Repeat step 1 with D2 and D3 squares and step 2 with F2 and F3 rectangles to make side and corner units for blocks 2 and 3 referring to Figure 6.

9. Repeat steps 3–6 with block 2 units to complete seven Rolling Stone 2 blocks referring to the block drawing.

10. Repeat steps 3–6 with block 3 units to complete six Rolling Stone 3 blocks referring to the block drawing.

COMPLETING THE QUILT

Refer to the Assembly Diagram for constructi­on steps.

1. Arrange and join four blocks to make a row referring to Figure 7 for positionin­g of blocks by number; press. Repeat to complete five rows.

2. Join the rows to complete the pieced center; press.

3. Join the G/H strips on the short ends to make one long strip; press. Subcut strip into two each 11/2" x 451/2" G strips and 11/2" x 381/2" H strips.

4. Sew G strips to opposite long sides and H strips to the top and bottom of the pieced center; press.

5. Join the I/J strips on the short ends to make one long strip; press. Subcut strip into two each 31/2" x 471/2" I strips and 31/2" x 441/2" J strips.

6. Sew I strips to opposite long sides and J strips to the top and bottom of the pieced center to complete the quilt top; press.

7. Create a quilt sandwich referring to Quilting Basics on page 102. 8. Quilt as desired. 9. Bind edges referring to Quilting Basics on page 102 to finish.
