MATERIALS
Materials given make 2 place mats. • Scraps red and white tonals • 3/ 8 yard light gray print • 1/2 yard dark gray print • Backing to size • Batting to size • Thread • Black topstitching thread • Buttons 4( 7/ 16"- diameter) black 4( 5/ 8"- diameter) white snowflakes 10 ( 3/ 16"- diameter) black • 1/4 yard fusible web • Template material • Basic sewing tools and supplies
CUTTING
Prepare reindeer templates for fusible appliqué using the full-size patterns given and referring to Raw-Edge Fusible Appliqué on page 14. Cut as directed on the patterns. From light gray print: • Cut 4 (21/4" by fabric width) binding strips. From dark gray print: • Cut 1 (121/2" by fabric width) strip. Subcut strip into 2 (121/2" x 161/2")

COMPLETING THE PLACE MATS
1. Arrange one reindeer motif with pieces in numerical order on the left end of one A rectangle with the bottom edge of the body piece about 31/4" up from the long edge of A and in 13/4" from the left short edge of A as shown in Figure 1.
2. When satisfied with placement, fuse the shapes in place. 3. Machine blanket-stitch in place with matching thread. 4. Create a quilt sandwich referring to Quilting Basics on page 102. 5. Quilt as desired. 6. Transfer the antler patterns to the top of the reindeer’s head. Stitch twice on pattern lines using black topstitching thread. 7. Draw two lines 11/4" apart from the bottom of the reindeer to the bottom edge of A as shown in Figure 2. Stitch as in step 6. 8. Bind edges referring to Quilting Basics on page 102. 9. Sew two of the 3/16" buttons in place for eyes, two for knees and one for nose referring to the pattern for placement. 10. Sew a 7/16" button at the bottom of each stitched leg line and the snowflake buttons on the body as desired to complete one place mat. 11. Repeat all steps to complete a second place mat.
