Mad for Madras
Create a unique madras-inspired woven look with just one block design and your favorite colors.
MATERIALS
• 1/ 3 yard light taupe tonal • 1/2 yard lime green solid • 5/ 8 yard rust tonal • 2/ 3 yard gold solid • 11/ 8 yards pink tonal • 17/ 8 yards olive green tonal • 21/4 yards peach tonal • Backing to size • Batting to size • Thread • Basic sewing tools and supplies
CUTTING
From light taupe tonal: • Cut 3 (21/4" by fabric width) strips.
Subcut strips into 42 (21/4") A squares. From lime green solid: • Cut 3 (4" by fabric width) strips. Subcut strips into 42 (21/4" x 4")
J rectangles. From rust tonal: • Cut 8 (21/4" by fabric width) strips.
Subcut strips into 126 (21/4") E squares. From gold solid: • Cut 3 (21/4" by fabric width) strips.
Subcut strips into 42 (21/4") B squares. • Cut 3 (4" by fabric width) strips. Subcut strips into 42 (21/4" x 4")
K rectangles. From pink tonal: • Cut 5 (21/4" by fabric width) strips.
Subcut strips into 84 (21/4") D squares. • Cut 5 (4" by fabric width) strips. Subcut strips into 84 (21/4" x 4")
G rectangles. From olive green tonal: • Cut 5 (21/4" by fabric width) strips.
Subcut strips into 84 (21/4") C squares. • Cut 3 (4" by fabric width) strips. Subcut strips into 42 (21/4" x 4")
I rectangles. • Cut 6 (2" by fabric width) L/M strips. • Cut 8 (21/4" by fabric width) binding strips. From peach tonal: • Cut 5 (21/4" by fabric width) strips.
Subcut strips into 84 (21/4") F squares. • Cut 5 (4" by fabric width) strips. Subcut strips into 84 (21/4" x 4")
H rectangles. • Cut 7 (5" by fabric width) N/O strips.
COMPLETING THE BLOCKS
1. Sew A to D and add K to complete one A-D-K block quarter referring to Figure 1; press. Repeat to make a total of 42 A-D-K block quarters.
2. Repeat step 2 with B, C and G; E, F and G; and C, D and H to make 42 each B-C-G, E-F-G and C-D-H block quarters, again referring to Figure 1. 3. To complete one Madras block, select one of each of the four different block quarters, one F square, two E squares and one each H, I and J rectangle.
4. Sew an E square between the I and J rectangles to make the center strip as shown in Figure 2; press.
5. Join the E and F squares to make the E-F unit. Join the A-D-K and E-F-G block quarters with the E-F unit to complete the left unit as shown in Figure 3; press.

6. Join the two remaining block quarters with the H rectangle to complete the right unit as shown in Figure 4; press.
7. Join the left and right units with the center strip to complete one Madras block as shown in Figure 5; press. 8. Repeat steps 3–7 to complete a total of 42 Madras blocks.
COMPLETING THE QUILT
Refer to the Assembly Diagram as needed.
1. Arrange and join six Madras blocks to complete a row, keeping the block orientation the same across the row; press. Repeat to make a total of seven rows.
2. Join the rows to complete the pieced center; press.
3. Join the L/M strips on the short ends to make one long strip; press. Subcut strip into two each 2" x 61¾" L strips and 2" x 56" M strips.
4. Sew L strips to opposite long sides and M strips to the top and bottom of the pieced center; press.
5. Join the N/O strips on the short ends to make one long strip; press. Subcut strip into two each 5" x 65¼" N strips and 5" x 65" O strips.
6. Sew N strips to opposite long sides and O strips to the top and bottom of the pieced center to complete the quilt top; press.
7. Create a quilt sandwich referring to Quilting Basics on page 94. 8. Quilt as desired. 9. Bind edges referring to Quilting Basics on page 94 to finish. QW
