COMPLETING THE BLOCKS
1. To create Block A, sew two F triangles to one A square, aligning edges, as shown in Figure 1. Press toward triangles. Make 20. 2. Fold an H rectangle along the long side and finger-press the center. Match the center to the unit from step 1 as shown in Figure 2 and sew. Press toward the rectangle. Do not trim. Make 20.
3. Align a B triangle with the H rectangle from step 2, placing pieces right side together and matching the centers as shown in Figure 3. Sew along the triangle edge. Press toward the triangle. Make 20.
During the winter months, the bursts of red and green that keep our spirits up are evident in the flutter of a cardinal, the pots of poinsettias decorating doorways, and the holly trees full of bright-red berries. Of course, the bigger inspiration is figuring out how many different designs I can create from rearranging these two blocks. That will while away the winter hours.”—Robin Koehler
4. Trim the unit from step 3 as shown in Figure 4 to 101/2" square. Make 20.
5. Repeat steps 1–4 with the D squares, E triangles, remaining F triangles and remaining H rectangles to make 20 units.
6. Arrange four units as shown to create Block A. Sew units together in pairs, matching diagonal seams and ends. Press toward the dark red units. Join the pairs and press seams open to complete the Block A. Make 10.
7. To create Block B, repeat steps 1–3, joining two G triangles, one C square, one J rectangle and one I triangle. Trim the block to 201/2" square to complete Block B. Make 10.
COMPLETING THE QUILT
1. Arrange Blocks A and B as shown in the Assembly Diagram, paying attention to block placement. Join the blocks into five rows, pressing seam allowances toward the Block B's. Join the rows, matching seams and pinning as needed. Press well.
2. Referring to Quilting Basics and the quilt photo, piece together the light green binding strips and the dark red binding strips into one long strip.
3. Layer, quilt as desired and bind referring to Quilting Basics. QW
