• 31/4 yards dark green • 3/ 8 yard from each of six different teal prints • 3/ 8 yard from each of three different gold prints • 1/4 yard from each of five different pink prints • 1/2 yard from each of three different gray prints • 5/ 8 yard dark pink print • 1/2 yard white print • Backing to size • Batting to size • Fusible web • Basic sewing tools and supplies

PROJECT NOTES

Read all instructio­ns before beginning this project.

Stitch right sides together using a 1/4" seam allowance unless otherwise specified.

Materials and cutting lists assume 40" of usable fabric width. WOF – width of fabric HST – half-square triangle QST – quarter-square triangle

CUTTING

Cut and prepare the two appliqué shapes for fusible appliqué as directed on each pattern piece provided and referring to Raw-Edge Fusible Appliqué on page 40. From dark green cut: • 7 (81/2" x WOF) G/H strips, stitch short ends to short ends, then subcut into: 2 (81/2" x 561/2") G and 2 (81/2" x 721/2")

H border strips • 3 (91/4") A squares From teal prints cut: • 9 (91/4") B squares • 13 (2" x WOF) D strips From gold prints cut: • 12 (91/4") C squares From pink prints cut: • 13 (2" x WOF) E strips From gray prints cut: • 10 (2" x WOF) F strips From white print cut: • 12 (2" x WOF) F strips From dark pink print cut: • 7 (21/4" x WOF) binding strips

COMPLETING THE BLOCKS

Blocks A & B 1. Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of the C squares. Layer one B square and one C square, right sides together. Sew 1/4" on either side of the drawn line as shown in Figure 1. Cut on the drawn line. Open and press toward the teal to make two B-C units. Make 12 B-C units.

2. Layer two different B-C units so opposite colors are next to each other. Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side in the opposite direction as shown in Figure 2. Sew 1/4" on either side of the drawn line. Cut on the drawn line. Open and press to make two Block A units. Make 12.

3. Repeat step 1 with three A squares and three C squares to make six A-C units as shown in Figure 3.

4. Repeat step 1 with three B squares and three C squares to make six B-C units as shown in Figure 4.

5. Layer an A-C unit and a B-C unit right sides together with C opposite A and B. Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side in the opposite direction as shown in Figure 5. Sew 1/4" on either side of the drawn line. Cut on the drawn line. Open and press to make two Block B units. Make 12.

6. Refer to Raw-Edge Fusible Appliqué to appliqué four melons to each Block A and Block B unit as shown in the block diagrams.

Blocks C & D

1. Sew one D strip to one side of one F strip. Sew one E strip to the opposite side of the F strip as shown in Figure 6. Press. Make 10. Align the 45-degree angle on a ruler along the edge of a fabric strip and make a cut. Align the 45-degree angle in the opposite direction to cut a triangle. Cut a total of 64 triangles.

2. Referring to the Block C diagram, select four different triangles and sew them together as shown in Figure 7 to make one Block C. Press. Trim to 81/2" square. Make 16 total of Block C.

3. Sew one F strip to opposite sides of a D strip as shown in Figure 8. Press. Make three. Refer to step 1 to cut 18 triangles.

4. Sew one F strip to opposite sides of an E strip as shown in Figure 9. Press. Make three. Refer to step 1 to cut 18 triangles.

5. Referring to the Block D diagram, arrange and sew together four triangles from steps 3 and 4 to make one Block D. Press. Trim to 81/2" square. Make nine total of Block D.

COMPLETING THE QUILT

1. Referring to the Assembly Diagram, arrange blocks into seven rows of seven blocks each. Sew blocks into rows and sew rows together to complete the quilt center. Press.

2. Beginning with the side G border strips, refer to Raw-Edge Fusible Appliqué and fuse an appliqué pattern 1/4" from the edge as shown in Figure 10. Position the remaining appliqué patterns 8" apart. Repeat for the other G border strip.

3. To make the top and bottom borders, position the first appliqué shape 81/4" from the end of an H border strip. Position three more shapes 8" apart. Repeat for the other H border strip.

4. Stitch one G strip to each side of the quilt center. Press, then stitch one H strip to the top and bottom. Press.

5. Layer, quilt as desired and bind referring to Quilting Basics.
