MATERIALS

• 2 yards dark blue • 11/ 8 yard light blue • 3/ 8 yard green • 5/ 8 yard yellow • 23/4 yards white • Backing to size • Batting to size • Basic sewing tools and supplies

PROJECT NOTES

Read all instructio­ns before beginning this project.

Stitch right sides together using a 1/4" seam allowance unless otherwise specified.

Materials and cutting lists assume 40" of usable fabric width. WOF – width of fabric HST – half-square triangle QST – quarter-square triangle

CUTTING

From dark blue cut: • 15 (41/2") A squares • 15 (51/4") B squares then cut

twice diagonally • 6 (31/2" x WOF) C strips • 7 (21/4" x WOF) binding strips From light blue cut: • 30 (47/ 8") D squares then cut

once diagonally • 30 (37/ 8") E squares then cut

once diagonally From green cut: • 15 (43/4") F squares From yellow cut: • 8 (21/2" x WOF) G strips From white cut: • 8 (21/2" x WOF) H strips • 15 (51/4") I squares then cut

twice diagonally • 30 (31/2" x 61/2") J rectangles • 3 (61/2" x WOF) K strips • 7 (21/2" x WOF) L/M strips, stitch short ends to short ends, then subcut into: 2 (21/2" x 721/2") L and 2 (21/2" x 641/2")

COMPLETING THE BLOCKS

Star Block 1. Stitch one G strip and one H strip together as shown in Figure 1. Press. Make eight. Subcut into 120 (21/2" x 41/2") G-H segments.

2. Stitch two G-H segments together as shown in Figure 2 to make a fourpatch unit. Press. Make 60. 3. Stitch one B QST and one I QST together as shown in Figure 3. Press. Add a D HST. Press. Make 60.

4. Referring to the Star block diagram, arrange four four-patch units, four B-I-D units and one A square into three rows. Sew the pieces into rows. Press. Join the rows to make a Star block. Make 15.

Square-in-a-Square Block

1. Sew one C strip to each side of a K strip as shown in Figure 4. Press. Make three. Subcut into 30 (31/2" x 121/2") C-K-C segments.

2. Sew one E HST to opposite sides of an F square as shown in Figure 5. Press. Sew one E HST to the remaining two sides. Press. Make 15.

3. Referring to the Square-in-a-Square block diagram, arrange two C-K-C segments, two J rectangles and one unit from step 2 into three rows. Sew the pieces into rows. Press. Join the rows to make a Square-in-a-Square block. Press. Make 15.

COMPLETING THE QUILT

1. Referring to the Assembly Diagram, arrange blocks into six rows of five blocks each. Sew blocks into rows and sew rows together to complete the quilt center. Press.

2. Stitch one L strip to each side of the quilt center. Press, then stitch one M strip to the top and bottom. Press.

3. Layer, quilt as desired and bind referring to Quilting Basics.
