MATERIALS

Materials given make 1 each pillow.

• 1 yard dark gray tonal

• 1/ 8 yard or fat eighth light gray tonal • 1/ 8 yard or fat eighth light blue tonal • 1/ 8 yard or fat eighth dark blue tonal • 4" square each white and red tonals • 5/ 8 yard muslin

• Batting to size

• 1( 1/2"- diameter) gray button

• 12" x 16" pillow form

• 16" x 16" pillow form

• Thread to match plus white for

whale spout

• Basic sewing tools and supplies

PROJECT NOTES

Read all instructio­ns before beginning this project.

Stitch right sides together using a 1/4" seam allowance unless otherwise specified.

Materials and cutting lists assume 40" of usable fabric width for yardage and 20" for fat eighths.

CUTTING FOR THE WHALE PILLOW

From dark gray tonal cut:

• 2 (21/2" x 161/2") L border strips

• 2 (21/2" x 81/2") M border strips

• 2 (9" x 161/2") pillow back rectangles From light gray tonal cut:

• 1 (31/2" x 71/2") A rectangle

• 1 (11/2" x 21/2") D rectangle

• 1 (11/2") E square

• 1 (11/2" x 31/2") F rectangle

From light blue tonal cut:

• 1 (11/4") B square

• 1 (21/2") C square

• 3 (11/2") G squares

• 1 (11/2" x 21/2") H rectangle

• 2 (11/2" x 31/2") I rectangles

• 1 (21/2" x 121/2") J rectangle

From dark blue tonal cut:

• 1 (31/2" x 121/2") K rectangle

From muslin cut:

• 1 (14" x 18") X rectangle

CUTTING FOR THE BOAT PILLOW

From dark gray tonal cut:

• 2 (31/2" x 161/2") V border strips

• 2 (31/2" x 101/2") W border strips

• 2 (12" x 161/2") pillow back rectangles From light gray tonal cut:

• 1 (21/2" x 81/2") N rectangle From light blue tonal cut:

• 2 (21/2") O squares

• 2 (3") P squares

• 2 (21/2" x 41/2") R rectangles

• 2 (11/2" x 61/2") S rectangles

• 1 (11/2" x 101/2") T strip

From dark blue tonal cut:

• 1 (31/2" x 101/2") U rectangle From red & white tonals cut: • 1 each (3") Q square

From muslin cut:

• 1 (18") Y square

COMPLETING THE WHALE PILLOW

Refer to the Whale Assembly Diagram for steps 4–11.

1. Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of the B and C squares and two of the G squares.

2. Referring to Figure 1, pin the B square to the top left corner and the C square to the top right corner of A. Sew on the drawn lines, trim seams to 1/4" and press to complete the Whale Body Unit.

3. Referring to Figure 2, pin a G square to the left and right ends of F. Sew on the drawn lines, trim seams to 1/4" and press.

4. Sew the remaining G square to the left side of E. Then sew the D rectangle to the bottom.

5. Sew the H rectangle to the right of the unit from step 4.

6. Sew the step 3 unit to the top of the step 5 unit to complete the Tail Section.

7. Sew the Tail Section to the right side of the Whale Body Unit to complete the Pieced Whale.

8. Sew an I rectangle to each side of the Pieced Whale.

9. Sew the J rectangle to the top of the Pieced Whale and the K rectangle to the bottom to complete the Whale Panel.

10. Sew an M border strip to each side of the Whale Panel.

11. Sew an L border strip to the top and bottom of the Whale Panel to complete the pillow top and press.

12. Sandwich the batting between the X rectangle and the whale pillow top with the pillow top facing up. Baste and quilt as desired.

13. As shown in the photo, stitch a whale spout with white thread and sew the gray button to the head for an eye.

14. Trim the X rectangle and batting even with the pillow top.

15. Press one long edge of both whale pillow back rectangles to the wrong side 1/4". Turn again 1/4" and stitch to hem.

16. Referring to Figure 3, layer the pillow top with the backing rectangles, right sides together and raw edges even. The hemmed backing edges will overlap in the center. Stitch around the outside edge and trim the corners.

17. Turn the pillow cover right side out and press. Insert the 12" x 16" pillow form to finish.

COMPLETING THE BOAT PILLOW

Refer to the Boat Assembly Diagram for steps 4–10.

1. Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of the P and O squares.

2. Referring to Figure 4, pin an O square to the left and right ends of N. Sew on the drawn lines, trim seam to 1/4" and press to make the Boat Unit.

3. Position the red and white Q squares with the P squares right sides together and stitch 1/4" on each side of the drawn line on P as shown in Figure 5. Cut apart on the marked line and press open to make two red and two white P-Q HST units. Trim each unit to 21/2" x 21/2".

4. Arrange the four P-Q units as shown in the Assembly Diagram. Sew together and press to complete the Sail Unit.

5. Sew an R rectangle to each side of the Sail Unit.

6. Sew the Sail/R Unit to the top of the Boat Unit to complete the Pieced Boat.

7. Sew an S rectangle to each side of the Pieced Boat.

8. Sew the T strip to the top of the Pieced Boat and the U rectangle to the bottom to complete the Boat Panel.

9. Sew a W border strip to each side of the Boat Panel.

10. Sew a V border strip to the top and bottom of the Boat Panel to complete the pillow top and press.

11. Sandwich the batting between the Y square and the boat pillow top with the pillow top facing up. Baste and quilt as shown in the photo or as desired. Trim the Y square and batting even with the pillow top.

12. Follow steps 15–17 in Completing the Whale Pillow to complete the boat pillow, using the boat pillow back rectangles and the 16" x 16" pillow form. QW
