PROJECT NOTES

Read all instructions before beginning this project.

Stitch right sides together using a

1/4" seam allowance unless otherwise specified.

Material and cutting lists assume

40" of usable fabric width.

Because the half-square triangle units used in these projects are fairly small, the starting squares are cut a bit large and will be trimmed to size after sewing to preserve accuracy.

WOF – width of fabric

HST – half-square triangle

QST – quarter-square triangle

CUTTING

From 1930s reproduction prints cut: • 16 (23/4" x 5") A rectangles

• 4 (2" x 31/2") AA rectangles

From off-white solid cut:

• 16 (23/4") B squares

• 16 (23/4") E squares

• 8 (31/4") C squares

• 2 (3") CC squares

• 8 (2" x 91/2") F strips

• 8 (2" x 121/2") G strips

• 4 (2") BB squares

• 4 (2") EE squares

• 2 (1" x 61/2") FF strips

• 2 (1" x 71/2") GG strips

From blue solid cut:

• 8 (31/4") D squares

• 2 (3") DD squares

• 6 (21/2" x WOF) binding strips

COMPLETING THE BLOCKS

Note: Mat and runner use Large Star blocks. Pot holder uses one Small Star block.

1. Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of each B and C square.

2. Lay a B square on top of an A rectangle as shown in Figure 1. Sew on drawn line. Trim seam allowance to 1/4". Press toward A. Make 16.

“Many of my friends enjoy decorating with antiques, and 1930s-style linens and quilts are popular with them. I used a variety of 1930s reproduction prints to create a set of modern linens with an antique flair.” —Holly Daniels

3. Referring to Figure 2, lay a C square on top of a D square, right sides together. Sew 1/4" from each side of drawn line. Cut on the drawn line. Press open with seam toward D. Square up as needed. Make 16 (23/4") HST units (21/4" finished).

5. Sew one E-HST unit to each A-B unit as shown in Figure 4. Press seam toward A to complete a quarter unit. Make 16 quarter units.

6. Arrange four quarter units as shown in the block diagram. Sew together in rows, then sew rows together to form the block center.

7. Sew an F strip to the sides and a

G strip to the top and bottom of each block, pressing seams away from center. Make four Large Star blocks.

8. Repeat steps 1–7 to make one Small Star block, using the double-letter pieces instead and trimming the CC-DD units down to 2" (11/2" finished).

COMPLETING THE TABLE RUNNER, TABLE MAT & POT HOLDER

1. Referring to the Table Runner Assembly Diagram, join three Large Star blocks into one row. Press seams to one side. Use the remaining Large Star block for the mat and the Small Star block for the pot holder.

2. Prepare for quilting by layering backing right side down, batting and quilt top right side up. If using heat-resistant liner, please follow manufacturer’s instructions for placement in quilt sandwich. ( The designer placed Insul-Bright between top and batting of the mat and pot holder.)

3. Quilt as desired. Bind referring to Quilting Basics.

4. To make hanger, cut a 11/2" x 4" strip from fabric scrap. Fold in half lengthwise and sew into a tube; turn right side out. Press. Fold tube in half, tucking in raw ends, and hand-sew to center of one side of pot holder.
