Christmas Hot Pads
What a fun project! With just four fat quarters, small amounts of batting and backing fabric, a pair of striking hot pads can be made in an afternoon.

MATERIALS
Materials given make two hot pads.
• 1 fat quarter white print*
• 1 fat quarter red print*
• 1 fat quarter green print*
• 1 fat quarter coordinating stripe* • 2 (14" x 14") squares backing*
• 2 (14" x 14") squares cotton batting • 2 (14" x 14") squares heat-resistant
batting*
• Basic sewing tools and supplies *Fabrics from the Holliberry collection from Moda Fabrics and Poly-Therm Fleece heat-reflective batting from Bosal used to make sample.
PROJECT NOTES
Read all instructions before beginning this project.
Stitch right sides together using a
1/4" seam allowance unless otherwise specified.
Materials and cutting lists assume
20" of usable fabric width for fat quarters. WOF – width of fabric
HST – half-square triangle
QST – quarter-square triangle
CUTTING
Cutting instructions makes two hot pads.
From white print cut:
• 8 (31/2") A squares
• 4 (41/4") B squares then cut twice
diagonally
From red print cut:
• 2 (31/2") C squares
• 4 (41/4") D squares then cut twice
diagonally
From green print cut:
• 4 (13/4" x 91/2") E border strips
• 4 (13/4" x 12") F border strips From coordinating stripe cut: • 6 (21/4" x 20") binding strips
COMPLETING THE BLOCKS
1. Referring to Figure 1, stitch one each B and D QST together as shown; press seam toward D. Make 16.
2. Referring to Figure 2, sew two units from step one together and press. Make eight.
3. Arrange four step 2 units, four A squares and one C square into three rows as shown in the block diagram. Sew into rows pressing toward the A and C squares. Join the rows to make an Ohio Star block. Make two.
4. Referring to the Assembly Diagram, sew one E border strip to each side of an Ohio Star block and one F border strip to the top and bottom. Repeat with the second Ohio Star block.
5. Layer the backing with wrong side up, then the heat-resistant batting with shiny side up, then the cotton batting and then the pieced top with right side up. Baste or pin layers together, quilt as desired and bind referring to Quilting Basics.
