Dig into your scraps for a variety of neutrals to combine with one red and one blue fabric for this scrap-quilt variation.

MATERIALS
• 24 different fat quarters
(or 6 yards total) neutral prints
• 3/4 yard each neutral print #1 and #2 • 33/4 yards red tonal
• 1 yard blue tonal
• Backing to size
• Batting to size
• Basic sewing tools and supplies
PROJECT NOTES
Read all instructions before beginning this project.
Stitch right sides together using a 1/4" seam allowance unless otherwise specified.
Press at each step of construction to avoid bulk.
Materials and cutting lists assume 40" of usable fabric width for yardage and 20" for fat quarters.
WOF – width of fabric
HST – half-square triangle
QST – quarter-square triangle
CUTTING
From fat quarters cut:
• 196 (31/2") A squares
• 168 (37/8") squares then cut once
diagonally to make 336 B triangles • 168 (23/8") squares then cut once
diagonally to make 336 D triangles • 200 (21/2") E squares
From neutral print #1 cut:
• 8 (21/2" x WOF) G strips, stitch short ends to short ends, then subcut into:
4 (21/2" x 781/2") G border strips
From neutral print #2 cut:
• 8 (21/2" x WOF) H strips, stitch short ends to short ends, then subcut into:
4 (21/2" x 781/2") H border strips
From red tonal cut:
• 504 (23/8") squares then cut once
diagonally to make 1,008 C triangles • 8 (21/2" x WOF) strips, stitch short ends to short ends, then subcut into:
4 (21/2" x 781/2") I border strips
• 10 (21/2" x WOF) binding strips
From blue tonal cut:
• 160 (21/2") F squares
COMPLETING THE BLOCKS
1. Referring to Figure 1a, stitch a C and D triangle together as shown to make an HST unit. Make 336 HST units; if needed, trim units to 2" x 2", keeping seam centered. Referring to Figure 1b, stitch C triangles to adjacent D edges of each HST unit to make 336 C-D units.
2. Referring to Figure 2, stitch a B triangle to a C-D unit as shown to make a
B-C-D unit. Make 336 B-C-D units. 3. Referring to Figure 3, stitch five E and four F squares together in three rows of three as shown, pressing seams toward F to make a nine-patch unit. Make 40 ninepatch units.
4. Referring to Figure 4, stitch two A squares and two B-C-D units together as shown to make a block row. Make 96 block rows. Set aside 24 block rows for pieced borders.
5. Referring to Figure 5, arrange two block rows, four B-C-D units, and one nine-patch unit together as shown. Stitch B-C-D units together in pairs, then join to the nine-patch unit to make the center row. Sew the three rows together to complete a block. Repeat to make 36 blocks.
COMPLETING THE BORDERS
1. Referring to the Assembly Diagram to make pieced borders, select six block rows set aside from step 4 of Completing the Blocks and arrange them end to end as shown; stitch together along the A sides. Repeat to make four pieced borders.
2. Stitch an I strip between a G and an H strip. Repeat to make four outer borders.
COMPLETING THE QUILT
1. Referring to the Assembly Diagram, arrange blocks into six rows of six blocks each. Sew blocks into rows and sew rows together to complete the quilt center. Press.
2. Stitch one pieced border to each side of the quilt center, noting orientation. Press.
3. Stitch an A square to each end of the two remaining pieced borders, then join to the top and bottom of the quilt center. Press.
4. Stitch two outer borders to sides of quilt. Press.
5. Stitch the remaining nine-patch units to each end of the remaining outer borders and then join the borders to the top and bottom of the quilt. Press.
6. Layer, quilt as desired and bind referring to Quilting Basics.
