Groovy Log Cabin

The Log Cabin is a great beginner block, and colors from the ’70s make this fun quilt. Washing the quilt after it’s finished makes it soft and cuddly.

PROJECT NOTES

Read all instructio­ns before beginning this project.

Stitch right sides together using a ¼" seam allowance unless otherwise specified.

Materials and cutting lists assume 40" of usable fabric width for yardage and 20" for fat eighths.

WOF – width of fabric

HST – half-square triangle

QST – quarter-square triangle

MATERIALS

• 30 (9" x 20") various fabrics

(or a fat eighth bundle)

• 5⁄8 yard orange #1

• 1 yard orange #2

• 1 yard orange #3

• 5⁄8 yard pink*

• Backing to size

• Batting to size

• Thread

CUTTING

From 4 dark and 4 light fat eighths cut:

• 3 (21/2" x 20") strips of each dark for a

total of 12 A strips

• 3 (21/2" x 20") strips of each light for a

total of 12 B strips

From each remaining fat eighth cut: • 2 (1½" x 9½") L strips

• 2 (1½" x 8½") K strips

• 2 (1½" x 7½") H strips

• 2 (1½" x 6½") G strips

• 2 (1½" x 5½") D strips

• 2 (1½" x 4½") C strips

From orange #1 cut:

• 13 (1½" x WOF) strips then subcut into: 42 (1½" x 6½") F strips

42 (1½" x 5½") E strips

From orange #2 cut:

• 20 (1½" x WOF) strips then subcut into: 42 (1½" x 8½") J strips

42 (1½" x 7½") I strips

From orange #3 cut:

• 21 (1½" x WOF) strips then subcut into: 42 (1½" x 10½") N strips

42 (1½" x 9½") M strips

From pink cut:

• 7 (2½" x WOF) binding strips

COMPLETING THE BLOCKS

Center Four-Patch Blocks

1. Sew one A and one B strip together. Press to the dark. Repeat to make 12 strip sets. From each strip set, cut seven

2½" wide units as shown in Figure 1.

2. Sew two units from step 1 together to make one four-patch unit as shown in Figure 2. Press. Make 42.

Log Cabin Blocks

1. Sew a C strip to a four-patch unit, making sure that the four-patch is aligned as shown in Figure 3. Press. Make 42.

Here’s a Tip

Press each strip on the Log Cabin block toward the outside of the block.

2. Stitch a matching D strip to the top of the unit from step 1 as shown in Figure 4. Press. Make 42.

3. Stitch an E strip to the right side of the unit from step 2 as shown in Figure 5. Press. Make 42.

4. Stitch a matching F strip to the bottom of the unit from step 3 as shown in

Figure 6. Press. Make 42. This completes the first round of the Log Cabin block.

5. Continue sewing clockwise around the block using matching G and H strips, then matching I and J strips as shown in Figure 7. Press. Make 42. This completes the second round of the

Log Cabin block.

6. Sew matching K and L strips, then matching M and N strips to the step 5 unit to complete the final round of the Log Cabin block as shown in Figure 8. Make 42.

COMPLETING THE QUILT

1. Arrange the Log Cabin blocks into seven rows of six blocks each. The quilt in the pattern has like colors going diagonally down the quilt but any arrangemen­t can be used.

2. Referring to the assembly diagram, sew the blocks together into rows. Press. Sew the rows together. Press.

3. Layer, quilt as desired and bind referring to Quilting Basics. QW
